Holiday Mantel Ideas

Ok I held out as long as I could.....I have been thinking about decorating for Christmas for WEEKS now!! I tried not to go there until after Thanksgiving but I lost the battle.

Sorry.

I've been thinking about how I'm going to decorate the mantel in my new house. The fireplace is so gorgeous and of course the centerpiece of the room - that's a lot of pressure right there to do it right!

So I've been browsing around for inspiration...as we do....and I thought I'd share some of my favorites.

And what did I discover about myself while browsing around?

I am definitely of the "less is more" mentality.

There will be greenery.

And there will be red.

Enjoy!

Giving Thanks....and a Thankgsiving Recipe

My younger daughter posted a beautiful reminder last night about taking time each day to be grateful for the little things in your life. She's a sweet and gentle soul and her post made me think about the many, many blessings we have in each day....blessings that are found in the simplest moments.

I'm writing this post while I have my lunch....leftovers from a wonderful meal last night - roast chicken with mashed potatoes, carrots and green beans that I grew in my veggie garden, and cranberry sauce I made last Thanksgiving and froze in tiny containers to enjoy all throughout the year.

It's such a little thing but I am so grateful for the good food on my plate and the sunshine outside my office window on this glorious day.

And I'm sharing my all time favorite Cranberry Sauce recipe with you.

Because I am grateful for you, my friends in Blogland, and your visits and sweet comments each day.

Thank you.

(Note: This photo was taken in my rental house last Thanksgiving, prior to moving to my new home. Excuse the iPhone quality.)

I made this on Thanksgiving morning while I was also making breakfast for my family. This is soooooo easy to make....and miles ahead of any cranberry sauce you will EVER buy in a store. Seriously.

Even if you aren't hosting Thanksgiving dinner you can make this and enjoy it all year with roast chicken, turkey sandwiches, etc. Or bring it to Thanksgiving dinner....like I do! It also freezes beautifully - I freeze it in these tiny disposable Glad Mini Round containers and then stuff them all into a large ziploc bag, and pull one out in the morning to thaw before dinner.

Here we go:

Bourbon Vanilla Cranberry Sauce

1 bag of fresh cranberries from the produce section in your supermarket
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of water
2 tbs of bourbon (I use cherry bourbon)
1 tbs of vanilla extract (not the cheap imitation stuff - use the real thing)

Mix all together in a saucepan and simmer on low for about a half hour until the cranberries have burst and are starting to break down. Remove from heat and let cool before placing into containers to freeze.

Sauce will thicken significantly as it cools.

Another easy-peasy recipe!!

Enjoy, my friends.

And have a happy weekend!

Slip Covered Sofa Review

When I was buying my house I spent ages researching sofas - I had an idea of what I wanted but kept rethinking it and driving myself crazy.

No surprise there.

The problem is that the living room is such a weird shape - it's narrow and kind of long with access to the hallway as well as the front door and dining room. Walkways need to be left clear.

Initially I thought I would get a sectional. But the more I thought about it, the more it bugged me that I felt it wouldn't be flexible enough for the space. I needed to be able to move things around until they felt right.

The only thing I was very sure about was that I wanted a sofa with a machine washable slip-cover. In a light, neutral color.

I read every review I could find online. I obsessed over it. I had three sofas to buy for my house (one upstairs and two downstairs) and I knew I was only going to do this once.

These sofas better last me a long, LONG time. I'm not doing this again.

Therefore, they needed to be very classic - simple, clean lines. Timeless. Nothing trendy. Neutral color - again, timeless and classic.

I ended up choosing a sofa from Ethan Allen for the living room - I didn't need a sofa bed in there and I knew that sofa would get the most use - that was always going to be the one I spent the most money on.

For the lower level I chose two of the same exact slip-covered sofa bed from Klaussner  - they were sold locally and I fell in love with how comfortable they were when I sat in them in the store.

They look very similar to the Ethan Allen sofa but the price was far less, which was perfect for the lower level.

It took quite a while for the sofas to arrive and I was so happy when they finally got delivered. I felt like a college kid prior to that - such a mish-mash of furniture stuck here and there!

Fast forward 6 months and I wanted to let you know what I think of having a slip-covered sofa.

This weekend when I was puttering I decided it was time to wash the cushion covers on the living room sofa.

I woke up with this thought and straight away I stripped the sofa until my living room looked like this.

The first cushion was a little tough to strip but once I got the hang of it the rest of them went rather quickly.

I put them right in the machine - all the covers fit along with the throw pillow covers, with room to spare. I washed them with Tide Ultra on a regular wash, and dried them on the delicate cycle until they were just slightly damp.

Back onto the cushions they went - all the reviews I read said to put them back on when they are still slightly damp to  make it a little easier.

I have to admit I was a little worried they would shrink and wouldn't be easy to put back on.

But it was so simple - no problem at all, took me less then 10 minutes to do them all!!

They came out lovely and soft, and of course my whole living room smells like fresh laundry now so that's a big plus!

Prior to this washing, I was spot cleaning the cushions as needed. Which worked really well but it was time for a full cleaning.

Because of this.

Yup - you got it - these little punks are pretty convinced that they own this house and can hang out anywhere they want to.

Another reason I chose sofas with slipcovers! I wish the chairs had slipcovers also, believe me!

All of my throw pillows are from Pottery Barn - I buy the inserts and different pillow covers that I can swap out when I get tired of looking at them....or the seasons change....or they need to be washed. Let's face it, pillow covers are a heck of a lot easier to store than a bunch of random throw pillows!

I love that I can change up the look any time I feel like it. I can bring in a ton of color or back it down to neutral again.

Whatever floats my boat.

Now that I know how easy it is to wash the covers it's time to tackle the lower level sofas.

I think I'll have the girls take care of that project. After all, it's their space.

Mommy has other things to do.

Like hang curtains in the garden cottage.

Priorities, right?

The House Hunt

Today's my anniversary.

Yes, another one.

What? I can have more than one!!

Exactly one year ago today I walked in the front door, for the very first time, of what was to become my new house ....and I fell in love.

Interestingly enough, I was ready to make an offer on another house. A completely different type of house.

This house was no longer on the market.

But during a site visit with a potential client, we started chatting about little things - what do you do for work, where do you live, etc....and I mentioned my house hunt and that I was ready to put an offer on a house.

She told me I really had to see this one before I put in that offer.

Yeah, sure. I've seen so many bombs....whatever. Ok, give me their contact info.

And I reached out to make an appointment to view the house.

That was no longer on the market.

The rest was history.

Kismet.

Was this the style of house I was looking for? I'd say no....I set out looking for a small cottage yet when I walked into this Chalet style home I knew it was perfect for me.

It checked off so many of the boxes on my Must Have list.

1. Must be on a quiet road and not directly on the road but rather set back, safe for the dogs. Check!

I'd say this is a pretty quiet road, wouldn't you? My road is one of  the prettiest in the area....I loved this road long before I found a home here! Lucky me!

2. Must have a decent size deck for entertaining - check!

My deck wraps around and I actually have the fire pit area, a dining table with 4 chairs, a garden swing, and another smaller dining table all in separate areas on the deck. Works for me!

3. Must have a fireplace or wood stove to keep energy costs down. Check!

Granted, it did not look like this when I bought the house - there was an ancient wood burning insert that I had to take out and replace. It was most definitely not up to code and anything but energy efficient! But the stone hearth was there and I fell immediately in love with that.

4. Must have room for a vegetable garden yet not be too much land for me to take care of. Check!

The fenced veggie garden was already in place, it just needed some TLC. And the house sits on 1.5 acres, but some of it is wooded so it's not overbearing for me to take care of. I use a push mower (cordless rechargeable one from Worx tools) and take care of the lawn myself for the most part. Once per month I have someone come in and cut the grass and weed-wack. I hate to weed-wack!! I just hate the way everything comes flying back at me, bouncing off every part of my head and body!! No, thank you!

5. Must have a minimum of 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. A master suite with Jacuzzi tub and walk in closet would be a huge bonus!

Well, it didn't have a master suite. But it did have 4 bedrooms and 2 full baths. 3 bedrooms/1 bath upstairs and 1 bedroom/1 bath downstairs. Perfect for sharing a home with my adult daughter! I combined 2 bedrooms upstairs to create my master suite so the home now has 3 bedrooms, 3 full baths. Perfect.

6. Must have decent bathrooms and kitchen - check!

I really didn't want to get into ripping out kitchens and bathrooms. I wanted to be able to move in right away and any improvements would be done while I was living in the house.

I love my kitchen. It's nothing fancy but it suits me to a T. It's got a great work flow and it's open to the dining room. What more could I ask?

7. Must have room for me to host Christmas dinner for 15+ people.

This house nearly lost me on that one. I fretted about the fact that the dining room won't be large enough to seat all my family for Christmas dinner.

And then I just said, "Get Over Yourself, Lady!"

It's one day a year.

And the rest of the year the dining room is absolutely perfect for us.

8. Must have a nice view. Check!

The house sits on a hill and has views of the mountain ranges on 3 sides. That works for me!

9. Must have a garage and ample storage for garden tools, etc. Check!

I have a two car garage plus a garden shed...and of course my wonderful garden cottage. Nuf said.

10. Must have a basement or a slab. NO CRAWL SPACE. They just totally creep me out. There's not one chance in H**L I'll ever go into a crawl space. Ever. For anything. Ever. All the pipes could burst at one time and I still won't go in there. So that was an absolute deal breaker for me.

Nothing creepy about this lower level living space!! My daughter's room is behind the white door at the bottom of the stairs - en suite, with private bath and private entrance. Perfect situation for two adult women living together! There's also laundry, partial kitchen, and my other daughter's living space down here....as well as a tiny office and utility room.

11. Must have nice neighbors.

I think we're good.

Welcome to my dream house.

Organizing the Garden Cottage

My garden cottage has been a work in progress since I bought the house back in April.

I absolutely loved the fact that I would have a whole separate space for all my gardening tools, pots, soil, etc - it was a great selling point for me.

However.....when I closed on the house and finally got in there to take a look around...I fell right through the floor. It was a hot mess.

Don't get fooled by the photo above...that was taken after we put a ton of work into this building.

I wrote about Phase I of the garden cottage improvements back in this post  and then shared Phase II in a second post, which you can view here.

Since then, there have been other updates to the garden cottage - one is still in progress, so stay tuned on that one - and one was a very nice surprise from my sweetie.

I woke up one morning in September to see this outside my bedroom window - Sweetie was having the grungy old skylight replaced in the shed - what a treat to have all that sunshine in there! And when I want to start seeds in the potting shed it will definitely help out!

We couldn't even see out of the old skylight - my sweetie tried his hardest to clean it up but it was too far gone. What a difference the new skylight made! This is what it looked like back in September, the morning after installation.

And what it looks like now in November.

And since it's November it's time for me to gather up the rest of the garden pots, clean them out, and store them for the winter. I knew I needed more storage - Brad's Daily Deals to the rescue again!!

I had this small metal rack for quite a few years - it has stored flowerpots in two previous homes and was my only shelving in the potting shed. As you can see, it was already overflowing and I still have a bunch of pots outside the shed that need to be cleaned out and stored.

So when Brad's had these shelves on a daily deal for about $30 each shipped from Walmart I jumped on the deal and ordered two.

I should have ordered more! These can be used so many different places!!

Next time.

Anyway, yesterday when I was puttering this was on my list of tasks to complete. I put the shelves together (which was super simple!) and started organizing the pots and gardening supplies that were scattered all around the shed.

The last project I completed in the dying afternoon light was to rehab my potting bench. It's been on my to-do list for months now and I decided to tackle it right then and there.

I found a can of deck stain the previous owners had left behind - we haven't been able to figure out where this was used, it must have been something they used prior to the colors that are on the house and deck now.

But I always hold onto this kind of thing. You never know when you might need it!

When I finally went inside the house to make dinner the shed was in much better shape and the potting bench was drying.

It was too dark for any decent photos. However it was just the right time for a cocktail!

This morning I headed back out with my camera and froze my little buns off to take a few photos to share with all my blogland friends.

Look at how lovely and organized my potting shed is now! Do you have any idea how happy this makes me?

Yes, I know I'm pathetic. I can't help it.

The mulch and moo-doo organic veggie garden soil has been stored in the deck box under the window....which doubles as a nice resting spot when I'm working in here.

My clay pots and other outdoor pots are all stacked neatly on the small original rack along with the saucers. Having everything stacked by size makes it so much easier for me to find and grab what I need. Also makes it easier to keep things tidy because it's so much simpler and quicker to put items right back where they belong.

The rack in the far corner holds a few plants I'm hoping will survive the winter. Also some buckets and other tools, lime, organic food for the veggie garden, and other various bits and pieces. The metal boxes on the top will go back on the potting bench for easy access on a daily basis come spring - they hold my gloves and small tools.

The rack right across from the potting bench holds my houseplant pots as well as some larger garden pots. The top rack has all my self-watering hanging planters and some other lightweight garden pots.

It's so easy to see exactly what I have now and just looking at everything lined up all neat and tidy makes me smile.

I still have some things I'd like to do in here - for one thing, I'm going to dig through my bins of old curtains and hang some cute little curtains on the windows.

I'd like a little chair in here to watch the rain on a spring day.

I'm thinking of getting a rolling plant rack that I can put in front of the rear French doors - perhaps I can keep my violas alive until the spring if I bring them in now. I'm not sure....but it's worth a try.

Other than that? Who knows!

But for now....I'm loving my organized little garden cottage. It's come a long, long way since that first day we fell through the floor.

Back to Reality

We had a fabulous getaway weekend in Burlington, VT with my daughters - but now it's Monday and it's back to reality.

Almost.

I took a vacation day today so I could get some things done around the house before I get back to work. I'm puttering today. I love puttering.

My sweetie and I shopping on Church Street
And I love Burlington - what a great town! There's so much to see and do - amazing restaurants, the lake is gorgeous, and the shopping is such a treat!

We don't have shopping in our little mountain top town.

I might go a little crazy every time I visit there.

Just a little bit.

This is what my dining room table looked like last night when I unloaded The Haul.

Yikes!!

But how could I resist some of these items? I mean, I'm only human.

These Christmas Cards? With the little squirrel? Just perfect for me and my little mountain house with all the wildlife.  They were calling out my name when I was browsing around in Homeport - one of my all time favorite stores on Church Street.

These pretty little bottles were so inexpensive and I knew I wanted to add some more colorful bottles to my window, just like Brenda has at Cozy Little House.  I just love how the colored glass looks in the window - it's like a little row of happiness!

And of course I can never walk by a Williams Sonoma...because I am a major foodie. And they were having their Friends and Family sale - 20% off  EVERYTHING!! Even sale items!

I'm already looking ahead to Christmas Morning with Spiced Caramel Apple waffles and a Cappuccino with Skinny Salted Caramel syrup.

And some Peppermint Bark as a palate changer after Christmas dinner. Yumzers!!

Of course while I was in Williams Sonoma I had to pick up a few tools. Their red silicone spoonulas and spatulas are my absolute go-to's in the kitchen - first utensils I reach for when I'm cooking.

I needed to replace a couple of my broken cutting boards and this little teak board was a fantastic deal at just around $12.

I also had to stop for a minute - ok an hour - in Kiss the Cook where I picked up this veggie brush to help with cleaning my giant veggie harvests

I also grabbed this wooden utensil with the flat edge - I have another one and they are absolutely the best for deglazing a pan. You can use them to scrape up all the little brown bits while deglazing and they are safe for nonstick coatings. This would be my #2 go-to utensil, when the silicone spatula is not firm enough.  It's always good to have extras of your go-to's so that when one is in the dishwasher you have another.

While in Kiss the Cook I grabbed this LeCrueset Kettle I've been drooling over for years. It was the last one they had in this color and I snatched it up real quick! I was so glad to be able to pick it up and examine it closely. I've been looking at it online for such a long time but something always held me back. When I picked it up and examined the quality it was a no brainer. It's replacing the cheap tea kettle I've had for years that has all the chips in the enamel. Done.

It's going to make friends with my new best friend. I can already see them becoming very close.

My sweetie is already looking forward to Spring and grilling season once again....he bought me this griddle for when I do grilled veggies. He's always picking me up little gadgets for the kitchen - I have a sneaking suspicion he wants me to keep cooking for him!

There's another fabulous store in Burlington called April Cornell - I have never seen it anywhere else and I always make it a point to take a walk down to the waterfront to browse around the store. Apparently the Burlington store is their flagship store, the largest they have. My favorite place is the bargain basement - they have an entire level of sale items - I can get lost down there for hours!!

I picked up these 2 great runners with matching napkins plus 4 placements with coordinating napkins.

I really, really love nice table linens!

Perhaps a little too much. I may or may not be a table linen addict.

This sweet little dishtowel came home with me as well - looking ahead to Valentine's day with this one of course!

I also may have a small dishtowel fetish. I'm not saying.

Just take  a look at this adorable tin box - it's almost like this was made just for me!! Roosters AND polka dots? I just can't.

I have no idea where it's going to live but I knew it had to come home with me.

Kim from Exquisitely Unremarkable - I know you're eyeballing it and yes, you're right - it would look great in your gorgeous kitchen or dining room - for sure!

But this one's staying right here on the mountain top. Sowwwyyy!!

I tell you, April Cornell has some lovely linens and accessories - I'm always surprised at what I find in there!

I think Sheila from My Kentucky Living would be right at home in that shop also with all those beautiful table linens!

There were a few more items that made their way home with me - these pillow covers from Pottery Barn as well as this gorgeous Sleigh Bell Velvet Runner - they will be absolutely gorgeous for Christmas!

The bottles you see are all Vermont made spirits - from front to back:

May I just say - YUMMMMMMMM!!!!

And yes, Rue from An Old Fashioned World - I know your tongue is hanging out right now.....wish you were here to sample these with  me!

We're going to have lots of visitors over the holiday period - these will be a nice treat when entertaining!

Speaking of cocktails.....

At the end of our shopping day we were POOPED!! Time to head back to our lake view room at the Hotel Vermont and have a cocktail.

It was a lovely trip, as always, and it goes by far too quickly.

Today we're back home on the mountain top and I'm puttering around putting away all my goodies.

My little bottles are so happy in my kitchen window - they are sharing the windowsill with a couple of little turkey votive holders for Thanksgiving.

It's the little things that make a home, isn't it?

My new kettle looks wonderful in my colorful kitchen. And my new cutting board looks happy there with all of his friends.

The place mats with their coordinating napkins from April Cornell are a nice addition to the fall table.

And my new Christmas Ornament from Homeport is just waiting for Thanksgiving to pass so it can make it's way to the front of the Christmas Tree.

Right in a prime location.

Welcome home.
