October On The Mountain Top

We're nearly at the middle of October and things are starting to look, well...a bit spooky around here!

Although there is still some gorgeous foliage around, we are most definitely past 'peak' leaf peeping season...and there are more and more naked trees surrounding the house these days.

A night or two ago, the moon was trying so hard to shine through the frigid mist I just had to run back in for the camera.

Definitely a Halloween scene, right there!

The lights from the cozy, warm house were beckoning me to come back indoors and warm myself by the fire.

The skies are cloudy today, with showers looming and a cold night ahead of us.

I'm ok with that....there's a fire smoldering in the wood stove, and I have a lovely dinner planned.

And it's almost the weekend....which can't come soon enough!

Meanwhile, the birds have been devouring the seed in the flat feeder, fattening themselves up for the cold winter ahead.

And, despite my announcement that gardening season was well and truly over, the pineapple sage is just now putting out the first blossoms.

Too bad the hummers appear to be gone...they would have loved these bright red flowers.

Tomorrow night will once again be in the mid twenties....brrrr!

The flannel sheets are on the bed, the fridge is full, there's a good stack of wood in the garage, and all is well in my world.

Bring it on!

  1. That first picture is Halloween Frame-Worthy! Love it! We are just getting into our peak season here. It is late coming for us this year. It is so windy that I am afraid we will lose all our leaves before we get a chance to enjoy them. xo Diana

    1. Our peak lasted about a day, it seemed, before the winds howled and the leaves started pouring down!! Enjoy your foliage while it lasts, my friend!

  2. It's so funny...we are still green here and the leaves haven;t even started to change. Your season is fully underway and scary, if I might add! ;) Great pic! Enjoy your fireplace and your weekend!

    1. I can't believe your leaves are still green, Kim - it's almost like we live in different countries, not the same state!!

  3. We lost our leaves early this year too, before I was able to take some really good pictures of them. The rain is coming down and the winds are picking up with this storm so I suspect but the end of it, there will be little to no pretty leaves left at all. :( I guess I will just have to console myself with some freshly baked pumpkin spice cookies. Life is rough!;)

  4. That first picture is a little spooky, but awesome, too! You're getting mid 20's? Wow, I can't imagine. What's a normal night-time low during winter?

    1. Hmmmm...a normal night time low in the winter would be in the low single digits, for sure. 20's would typically be our high for the day, as a norm. Brrrr!

    1. My daughter is such a big Halloween fan, she brings a festive mood to the house still at this time of year, even though she's 25!

  6. Wonderful moon mist shot. Beautiful trees behind your deck. We are still mostly green in our mountains, but a cold snap this week is getting the leaves started.

  9. Thanks for your kind words and for stopping by. Yes, it sure was an awful storm...and some of the rivers haven't even peaked yet....so much flooding, so much damage. Love our moon picture...that's a great one! Wow, it's already so frosty there....your season is way ahead of ours. I loved seeing all the produce you got from your garden! That was so cool!

    1. How frightening, wow! We've been watching the after effects of the hurricane on the news all week, it's just terrifying how weather can do so much destruction to an area.

  11. Love those bright autumn colors of the trees. It's hard to believe your low temps are in the 20's.

Your description of a stack of wood, a fire to keep you warm, a full larder and good food to eat, and flannel sheets to slip into sounds really good for sure.

  15. You were right about grabbing your camera for that frightfully perfect photo!. It's a winner! Our leaves are just starting to turn. I heard them announce the other day that we're about two weeks behind where we normally would be. While it's on the chilly side now, it's suppose to get up in the upper 70's or lower 80's in a few more days and then chilly again.

  17. Love the spooky photo! I also love those lights ~ they always make me happy! We're still in the high 70's overnight...bah! I just love cool/cold nights and a bright sunshiny day to follow.

You know, I haven't tried flannel sheets but they always look so cozy. I'm afraid I'd get too hot. I had a friend that lived in Loveland and yes, that down comforter was delightful!
