The Garden In Late October

Where have I been, you ask?

Why, playing nurse for my sweetie, of course! He had surgery on his arm this week, to reattach his bicep tendon to his elbow.

How did he injure it, you ask?

Why, trying to lift his tractor, of course!

The silly things men do!

So, I've been a bit busy tending to his needs....and my own. But I wanted to pop in and give you a peek at the gardens in late October.

Because this is happening.

Yup, you got that right - the mountain top is getting it's first round of snow today. As a matter of fact, it has already begun.

So, I grabbed the camera yesterday and snapped some shots of what's happening on the property these days. I know a lot of you are just getting into your fall season, but for us, it's pretty much done. Oddly enough, there are still a few flowers hanging on, despite a few nights in the mid twenties already!

The basket by the kitchen door is still a bright spot on the deck.

As is the hanging basket by the other deck door. It's nice to still have a few flowers to brighten the days!

Especially when you can see the bad weather building up over the mountain and moving in.

The Snapdragons that I planted way back in April are still blooming like mad - the frost certainly didn't damper their spirits!

The Pineapple Sage just started blooming recently and it's absolutely lovely outside my kitchen window.

The Stock that stopped flowering in the heat of the summer started reblooming after a cut-back, once the cooler weather hit. I just love Stock - it's got the most lovely fragrance, and it's such a tough little flower!

The view back towards the house from my little garden cottage - not much color left, but still a glorious sight.

I never did finish all the projects I had planned around my little garden cottage - I guess they are going to have to wait for the spring at this point!

My neigh-bor wants to know why I'm always walking around with either a camera or a cocktail after work!

My property is nothing but a sea of leaves at this point - any volunteers for raking duty?

The bees have bombarded the few flowering plants that are left - including this lone stalk of Goldenrod.

The maple at the front of the house is one of the last trees to change each year - it's glorious when it does, and well worth the wait!

The Cosmos are still putting on a show,  much to the delight of the bees....and me.

Oh, that glorious maple!

All of this beauty may be gone by the morning, replaced by another season of wonder.

Meanwhile, there's a fire in the woodstove and the crockpot is full of chicken broth.

It's a very, very good day.

  1. Your property is just so beautiful. It reminds me of the mountains where I grew up. Sometimes I really long for the peace and serenity of the mountains-there is nothing in the world like it...and when the snow sets in you feel like you are in your own little world.

Hoping/praying for a quick recovery for your husband. xo Diana

  7. It's all so lovely there...we are finally getting fall color here now; I think that even though we had a few frosts we needed rain and once it came the trees began to change.

I saw the snow forecast for the Northeast and wondered if you were going to see some there :)

  10. Oh my gosh! Trying to lift a tractor! I hope his healing is swift and complete. I'm sure your sweet nursing capabilities are helping him right along.

What fall beauty you are having. What do you do with all of those leaves? Mulch?

You've still quite a bit of color left before winter hits. Lovely photos.

The camera is to capture the beauty of many different moments in your life, the drink after work to celebrate it all.

Have a great week ~ FlowerLady

    1. Hi Lorraine - yes, the leaves get mulched to feed the lawn next spring! And I absolutely love your quote "The camera is to capture the beauty of many different moments in your life, the drink after work to celebrate it all." - how absolutely perfect and completely captures my ideal!!

  11. Ooh, Debbie, your sweetie's surgery was a serious one! Thank goodness he was able to get the surgery timely, and hopefully he'll have a full recovery of use of that arm's strength.
It's a striking difference, comparing the pace of autumn from the north to the mid-south, where I am (WV)! We did have snow in the eastern part of the state, but not much. Trees are still not in full color, but so dry that the weekend storm did blow off a lot of leaves. Hoping for peak color in the next week here....
Looks like your leaves may just have to wait their turn for getting raked....maybe just let them compost naturally this year, given your nursing duties. :)

  19. Praying for your Sweetie as he heals under your tender loving care. Those flowers are just gorgeous. I took mine down and they are still surviving by the hot tub. I think they like the warmth. That reminds me, I need to give them a drink of water tomorrow. :)

    1. No doubt your flowers will hang in for a long while by the hot tub with the warmth!! I put some in my garden cottage last winter, hoping I could keep them going until spring, but alas - nope, no good!

  24. Wishing your sweetie a swift and complete recovery. Yep, attempting to lift a tractor will mess you up for sure. My husband had shoulder surgery to repair a rotator cuff and torn bicep a couple of years ago...good as new now...

    1. Wow, Donna, that's ironic - my sweetie had his rotator cuff done a couple of years ago, with a torn bicep also....on the other side! That was a tough recovery for him, poor thing - as you well know, living through it with your hubby!
