Spaces That Speak To My Heart

Happy New Year Everyone!!!! I truly hope you had a marvelous time ringing in 2018 with someone you love!

I was pretty much sick as a dog with a nasty head cold all weekend, so I spent some much needed time reading by the fire and bouncing around online.

You know how when you have a little downtime you love to bounce around the web and gawk at all the pretty?

We see so many gorgeous images out there on Instagram, Pinterest, and the big old WWW that sometimes I seriously want to rip everything out of my house and start from scratch.

But then you know what would happen? I'd just get my house the way I love it (like now, hello!) and then I'd see something amazing out there and want to start all over again!

Since that's not practical, realistic, or ever going to happen, I like taking these gorgeous images, storing them away in my mind (or on a Pinterest page) and borrow elements of each for my own home.

That's ok, if I had just one style in my house no doubt I would get sick of it in no time. And I don't have the time, energy, or bank account to redecorate my house over and over again. Nope, not happening. Therefore, I tend to shy away from trends and go with what speaks to my heart.

I have always been drawn to cozy, warm, welcoming spaces, and this Airstream is no exception. I could easily see myself spending a ton of time in this sweet cozy spot!

Via
Likewise this cozy, boho chic space. The snow is flying outside my window right now, and I would definitely love to hunker down in this cozy spot surrounded by plants, crank up the fire, and read a good book.

Via
What about this awesome little living space? It's not trendy, but it's totally cozy and just my style with all those plants and that 70's vibe!  Hey what can I say, I was a child of the 70's....I think I'll always be drawn to this style!

Via
Just as with living rooms, I am most enamored by a cozy, warm kitchen rather than those 'perfectly perfect' kitchens I see all over Pinterest. Let's face it, if you put so much money into making your kitchen 'trendy' to suit the times, you are going to have to redo it every few years to keep up. I'd much rather cook in a kitchen like this than a sterile, cold, ultra-modern space with the most state of the art appliances.

Via
This space enchants me to no end. I can't tell you how many times I've seen it on Pinterest, and I'm sure I've pinned it more than a dozen times once or twice but it never fails to make my heart sing when I come across it again.

I could see myself quite happily puttering around in that tiny kitchen, making a cup of tea, candles lit, music playing.

Via
This bathroom isn't that perfect spa-getaway bathroom we see all over social media. However, this space makes me long to linger and enjoy a scented bubble bath, windows open, listening to the sounds of the evening and the breeze in the trees.

Via
Here's another one. There's not a thing 'trendy' about this bathroom but it makes me want to sink right into that tub and enjoy a good long, hot soak. The log walls with the chinking between them just makes the space feel so warm and cozy, like a big hug.

Via
Moving on to bedrooms, take a look at this space. There's nothing 'current' about it, yet it welcomes you in and makes you want to cuddle into that bed.  The bed is nicely dressed, neatly made, and has crisp white linens. The wallpaper may be dated but it still screams 'cozy' and they have definitely made it work for this room.

Via
Here's another super cute bedroom. Again, not keeping with any of the current 'trends' but yet it works! I actually love that wallpaper, but then again I've always been a fan of cottage florals. Again, it's the neatly made bed, the layers of different colors/patterns on the bed and around the room...it just makes me want to peel back those sheets and slide underneath, settling in with a good book!

Via
Speaking of a good book, this room made me drool all over my keyboard. Oh my gosh, what a reading nook! I can only hope there's a fireplace somewhere in there at the other end to make it just perfect.

What do you think? What kind of spaces speak to your heart? Are you one for trends or do you tend to shy away from them and stick with what you love?

  1. I think trends are overrated. I love what you love, cozy spaces, filled with personality, warmth, charm and color. The perfectly perfect rooms are pretty to look at too, but my heart belongs to the pictures above! Hope you're feeling better in your own super charming and lovely home.

    1. I think I'm on the mend, Kim, although I had to spend time running around in this crazy weather today, that was NOT helpful!

  2. If my parent's camper had only looked that cozy we may have enjoyed our camping trips as kids. LOL So many cozy spots. And I am all for a room with floor to ceiling books!

  4. Two days after Christmas I was sidelined with a horrible cold that seems to have become my best buddy, and remains with me today. I'll be glad to feel better, hopefully soon. All of these pictures are so inviting, but I have to say that soaking in a hot tub surrounded by candles seems most appealing to me. I love the boho style, and have elements of that throughout my house, but went totally crazy with it in the lower level. Like you, I like so many different styles, it's hard to choose just one. Happy New Year! I hope you're feeling better (and I hope I feel better soon).

  5. I'm sorry you had that cold...I think that is what I have now. Ok comments on these pictures...I loved them all but that book nook had me right away. I dream of having my own personal library room one day for all my treasured books. :) The second bathroom, as pretty as it looked, immediately had me saying "that is awkward" with the placement of the taps and faucet. It would make getting into and out of that bath a bit tricky and I know I would bump a knee and get a toe caught on it every time. My husband used to be a carpenter and built homes for a living so I look at everything with a very practical and critical eye. ;)

    1. Ha ha that's funny Debbie! I guess it didn't occur to me because my faucets are on that side of my tub also - I'm used to climbing in around them! :)

  6. Lovely photos Deb. My practical side is looking at that reading nook and thinking 'where's the task lighting'? Lol

I'm a bath person so would happily spend time in those tubs, weird faucets or not!

  9. Before the days of Pinterest, I made an inspiration book of photos from magazines, many just in the style you like. I too am drawn to cozy spaces, rooms full of books, beautiful gardens. I now have a library in my home inspired by those pictures. I wish it was cozier, but it is in a space with a very high ceiling.

  10. Oh, I want to change it up every time I see a new image of a room that looks divine! ... but of course for most of us that's not possible - so now and then I move furniture around or bring in a few new smaller items like pillows, blankets, a new picture, a new rug -

    1. I'm the same, Karen Ann, although there's really no room to move furniture around in my house. But I'm huge on swapping out pillows and accessories!!

  12. The thing about trends is that by next year they won't be the trend anymore. Keeping up with trends would tend to be an expensive way to live. I'm too old for that nonsense. Happy New Year!!!!

    1. So absolutely true, I couldn't agree more! Eventually if we hold onto something long enough it will come around again, right? :)

  13. My theory on decor is if you surround yourself with what you love it will always feel like home. I like change but keep very much to my style. Less expensive and time consuming that way too. Sometimes just moving a few pieces around or adding a new one can make a big difference. I love all these wonderful pins. So pretty. Sorry you had a head cold yuck. Hope you start to feel better.
Happy Friday. Yeah the weekend is here!
    Hugs,
    Kris

  15. I love cozy and I'd have to say my little place is that because of the size, at 675 sq. ft. I've never been trendy. I love color, older vs. modern. Your pics were great and things I could live with. :-)

Hope you are feeling much better with each new day.

  17. I try to follow my heart, which is very traditional. I try not to be boring in my decorating, but the truth is that I feel most comfortable in boring, cozy spaces. I rely on neutrals for the base with colors as the accents. Yeah, I guess my decorating might be boring to others, and my rooms will never be pictured in a magazine (or pinterest), but that's okay with me, because it's what makes ME happy! That being said, I still spend hours (more than I care to confirm) looking at decorating ideas online and in magazines, and I am having some fun right now searching for items to put in my new soon-to-be home. BTW, I am also recovering from a very nasty cold. It seems everyone I know has been sick these last few weeks! UGH!

    1. Aww, Vickie, I hope you feel better soon! I'm the same as you, I try to stick to neutrals for the big pieces and bring in the color with accents and paint. The cheap stuff, ha ha!

    2. Hahaha...are we calling ourselves cheap? Yes, I can't seem to buy anything that isn't on sale, and I have been known to make a penny squeak! ;)

  19. Not a trendy person here....I decorate with what I love and I love all styles. I heartily agree about the kitchens...I'd much rather have an older cozy kitchen than a new sterile colorless one, although I think they are pretty too. Just not to live with. I think that's what it comes down to. It's what you are comfortable living with. My sympathies for being sick over the holidays....been there!

    1. That's it, AnnMarie - I look at the photos and I think they are pretty....but I'd want to 'cozy' them up with plants and candles and things that feel cozy...which defeats the purpose of the design entirely! So I guess I'm sticking with cozy!

  20. I came over to see it you were affected by "Grayson" and how you fared.

I had that same sort of awful cold over Christmas :( And I found ways to distract myself as well...you looked at cozy spaces and I went on a Netflix binge...

And we are both still alive so our medicine worked, lol

  22. Like you, I don't follow decorating trends. I simply decorate with what I love. My kitchen is definitely outdated with it's 1980's oak cabinets and white appliances, but on the whole, I love my kitchen! It's warm, cozy and welcoming. Truth be told, I don't even like stainless steel appliances. I like white ones. Oh, just FYI...I clicked on a few of the links underneath the photos you posted because I wanted to see the original posts so I could Pin...but the links don't go to the original pages. I hope you are feeling better by now!
