Winter Mornings on the Mountain Top

Winter has settled in to stay on the mountain top and we are heading into a deep freeze for the next few days.

Sunday night we will be hitting zero.

Uggghhhh.

The skies sure are pretty on these frosty winter mornings....pretty enough that I am compelled to run back into the warm house after feeding the birds, grab the camera, and head back out for photos.

In my bathrobe, more often than not. Yup, that's me. Thankfully my house is pretty secluded.

You can see the road from my house now, through the trees. Come spring, I'll be in my own little world once more.

But today, spring seems a very long way off.

These three evergreens used to shield my house perfectly from the neighbors' house. There were two additional evergreens that had to be taken down after an ice storm bent them in half. Then Verizon came and chopped the tops off these two trees....I was furious and it still makes me angry every time I look at them!

Someday perhaps I'll plant some others in this corner as well. However, in spring and summer it hardly seems necessary when all the undergrowth fills in so nicely.

Summer seems just a memory now.

Many happy hours were spent out here the past two years. Last Christmas the kids sat out here and had a cocktail with their cousins before dinner.

Also last Christmas I sat out on this swing and peeled potatoes, with nothing but a fleece on to keep me warm.

That's ok....this is how winter on the mountain top is supposed to be. I don't really mind, or I wouldn't live here.

Come April, when the snowstorms keep coming, that's a whole different ballgame.

But for now, the pups and I are warm and cozy in the house, enjoying the glow of the tree for a couple more days.

In my house, we always keep the tree up until after January 6th, which is my dad's birthday.

Happy Birthday, Pops. I love you.

xoxo

    1. That's true, my friend - spring in the mountains is a glorious affair! I'm regretting that I didn't plant any more spring bulbs in the fall - somehow I never got to it!

  2. I always fill the birdfeeder in my bathrobe too so you aren't alone. I just make sure I'm not going to get locked out of the house - ha! Your snow is lovely and your skies!

  3. Happy New Year, We've had lots of snow here in northern Colorado as well-but maybe not as much as you have. I shoveled the walkways this morning when it was 5 degrees and it was cold. Supposed to get really cold tomorrow. Stay warm and enjoy the pristine snow views.

  5. Happy New Year, Poodle Scoop! Oh, your snow is beautiful and I know it's cold as everything. We will turn around and spring will be here. After moving up north, I can see now why the different seasons are so looked forward to. I love it! Take care, sweetie, and we'll keep on blogging in this new year.

    1. Happy New Year to you as well, Shelia! You're so right, before we know it we'll be looking for those spring bulbs to be shooting up out of the frozen earth!

  6. I didn't get to planting my spring bulbs either! I wanted a few just to force indoors but the stores don't have any for that now, just too late all around. Your snow is beautiful, we are expecting our first snow of the season this weekend. I plan to sew and watch football - its Wild Card Weekend!

  7. The snow is beautiful but I'm glad we don't get snow, except every few years, and then not much to speak of.

    Stay warm!

  8. Your weather is much like our's right now. It was -4 F this morning when I got up. I think we may have hit 11 F today. We are looking for the temperature to warm up and then have a week of snow starting this Sunday night.

Just a quick question. I noticed that your cushions were still on your deck furniture. Are they attached and unable to come off? Seriously, it's little things like this that keep me wondering at night? OCD much???? LOL! ;)

    1. Oh my gosh, -4 is COOOOOLLLDDDDD!!! And a week of snow? You are going to be buried!! Yes, my cushions are still on my furniture outside, simply because I'm afraid if I put them in the garage the mice will chew into them to get the stuffing for nests!! They're safer outside!

  9. Looks like a postcard!
We are supposed to get some snow this weekend. I haven't seen snow for 30+ years, so I'm excited! Enjoy your cozy nest.

  10. We suppose to get our first snow starting today. Its been in the 50's all week and in the 30's today. Sunday, it supose to be 7 degrees! Oh wow.
Guess what? Im making your butternut squash soup today when I get off work. We will eat on it all weekend. Do you have any sugestions on what else goes with it on the side? such as cornbread, or crackers?

    1. How exciting, I love the first snow of the season, Lisa!! I often eat the butternut squash soup as my lunch at work, for a zero point lunch....especially if I have plans to go out to dinner that night. Saving points for dinner and drinks, you know? :) Cornbread would be awesome on the side, the sweetness would balance the soup nicely. I hope you love it!!

  12. Best of all, I love the tribute to your dad. HB in heaven to your dad.

ps....I feel the same way of the utilities wreaking havoc on the trees. I know they have a job to do but, just like everything else, there are alternatives to how it's done.

    1. Rita, thank God my Dad is still with us, he's in Florida for the winter with my mom, and they come back to NY for the summer and early fall. I just got off the phone with him -he's cooking his birthday dinner right now! :)

  13. You do have a gorgeous mountaintop place! Too bad the trees had to come down or be trimmed. The inside of your house is so cozy and inviting. It was in the mid-50's last week and now we are down to single digits with wind chills in the minus range. Stay warm! xoxo

  15. Beautiful scenery out your back door- and like you...I would be furious if the electric company topped off any of my trees. They are known to cut at will and be darned to whomever it upsets. Well, stay warm!

  16. It was -4 here in IL when I got up this morning. I am so cold even in the house today that I turned the heat up and am wearing a fleece scarf around my neck! We went out for lunch and man, does that wind ever sting your face! No snow here right now - the ground is bare except for some big dirty snow piles in parking lots (and one in our yard where it's constantly shady) leftover from our last snow storm. Looks like we're in for some snow next week, but I think more like just flurries and a dusting.

    1. We don't have any significant snowfalls in our immediate forecast, either, Melanie - a few inches here, a few more there. No big blizzards. I guess I'm ok with that!

  17. Oh! How very beautiful your setting is!!! Our high today was Minus 4° and not much higher predicted for tomorrow either. Your tree by the fireplace looks so festive and beautiful.

  19. It certainly looks like a winter wonderland! We woke up to -1 here this morning. BRRRR! The sun shined all day and it looked beautiful from inside. Walk outside, and you know that it is definately cold! I was going through some old photos today to clean out my laptop. Garden photos had me longing for spring! :)
