The Garden In Late May

Like much of the country, we have had soooooo much rain this spring, whew sometimes I thought it would never stop!

But lo and behold, this morning I awoke to sunshine and blue skies, so what do you think I did?

I grabbed my camera, that's what!

The first thing I saw were these two cutie pies enjoying the sunshine with their morning dental chew.

They are so ridiculously spoiled, and I love that I can give them the life they truly deserve!

I couldn't help snapping a shot of my dining room in the morning sun....that sight never fails to bring a smile to my face!

I headed out next to feed the birds and see what's blooming on this glorious morning.

Won't you join me?

When I head out the kitchen door and down the deck stairs, I turn right towards the garden steps and this is my view.

I need to freshen up the paint on that urn, but I'm so pleased that the pansies I started from seed so many months ago are starting to bloom!

On the opposite side of the door (that leads to the garage) this bright and happy little planter greets me.

My pansies may have taken their sweet time blooming but they are so incredibly healthy!!

When we turn to the right, we can head down the garden steps....they need weeding, but then again, so does everything after all this rain....where's that clone I keep asking for?

On our left as we head down the steps is the perennial bed, and it is a jungle already!

At the bottom of the garden steps we can see into the front garden, where my Japanese Maple has finally leafed out.

Isn't it glorious!!!  I am a huge fan of using dramatic and contrasting foliage in the garden for all-season interest.

You can see the Hostas I planted around the base of the Japanese Maple contrast not only with each other, but also with the glorious red leaves of the tree.

The maple itself contrasts beautifully with all the greenery surrounding my house, and really stands out as a true specimen tree and showpiece in the garden.

The chartreuse Hostas in the birdbath garden by the newly extended path really add a bright pop of color to this section, even when very little is blooming at the moment.

Speaking of blooming, there are a few things that have come into bloom this wee (happy dance!!)....the first is the Ajuga (Bugle Weed) - I am a huge fan of Ajuga and have been transplanting it in batches out of my front lawn where it does NOT belong into various garden beds.

Sometimes it takes, sometimes it doesn't. But when it does and it blooms it simply lights up the garden.

The Yellow Lamium (Yellow Archangel) by the veggie garden came into bloom this week - isn't it lovely?  This plant was here when I bought the house, but I had no idea what it was...it's so easy to cultivate, I just stick pieces of it into my other garden beds. I have always had Lamium in white and purple (Dead Nettle), but this is the first yellow variety I have seen!

The Lilacs are finally starting to put on a show - I wait ever so impatiently for them to bloom, and when they do I am beyond myself with joy! Isn't it a shame their bloom season is so short? While it's here, I always have a bouquet in the house, to enjoy their incredible scent up close.

The Bleeding Hearts in my wild garden are just starting to bloom also - aren't they just the most unusual flower?

What's blooming in your garden?

  4. We have had nothing but rain, too. I think we've only had a few days the entire month that were sunny. My lilacs are on their last leg already...and they didn't look as good this year as they usually do. My Bleeding Heart is in full bloom right now - it's huge and lush! At least one plant is enjoying all the rain! Enjoy your day of sunshine and this long weekend.

  5. I have some lilies coming up beside my porch that I truly do not remember planting there. My wheel shaped flower beds outside our bedroom window had beautiful tulips in it this year and since I truly am not a huge fan of gardening or of flowers, that is about all their is, but I must say your yard is absolutely beautiful!

    1. It's not for everyone, Carol - my older daughter has zero interest in it....but that will probably change when she has her own house some day!

    1. Hmmmm I don't think so and I hope not....but my dogs don't eat anything out of my garden anyway, just a little grass every now and again.

  11. Debbie, I really enjoyed your garden update, about a month behind our region. Love your pansies from seed! Wow, they look fabulous. The hosta and Japanese maple are definitely showcased beautifully too. I've still been monitoring my (rather, the new owners') landscape. My lilacs, azaleas, anemones, and iris are all now spent, but my poppies, buttercups, spirea, roses and lavender are blooming great guns. I've harvested lavender, and plan to transplant several plants to family & friends before we go for good in the next couple of weeks. {sniff} It's all good, I'm ready to move on. I can enjoy gardening on our terrace and at my daughters' & sisters' homes.
