Mountain Mama's Home Sweet Home

Any of you who have been following me for a while know my posts are sporadic in the summer months, to say the least.

My work life is insanely busy.....and my home life isn't much better.

There's so much to be done to keep up with the gardens and my property, and the fact that I'm so busy with outside chores certainly doesn't mean the inside chores magically disappear!

This weekend I forced myself to spend some time indoors, and I'm so glad I did.

The pillow covers got changed out, the floors were cleaned, and the house just feels much fresher.

Let's face it....with three sweet furbabies, if I don't keep up on my house it could easily go to the dogs....pun intended, for sure!

Can you see two of my sweet babies enjoying a sun puddle in the living room?

They sure do love the sunshine! In the mornings, after they go out to do their business, they will always find a little spot of sunshine to curl up in while I'm going about my morning chores.

I stand at the kitchen sink and fill the kettle, to make my morning tea.

The hummingbirds usually keep me company while I unload the dishwasher and put away any pots and pans that have dried on the draining board.

I keep the kitchen door open as often as possible, to let the fresh morning breezes into the house while I'm puttering around starting my day.

In the dining room, the sun shines off the table, where I've removed the tablecloth to toss it in the wash.

I take advantage of every dry day to put a load of wash out on the line before I head to work....it's not only hay you have to make when the sun shines!

In the dining room window, the sign my Sweetie got me at Christmas still sits propped on the sill. If I have to break down and put the A/C in the window, I'll have to find a new spot for it.

I always have pops of red around my house, but for some reason in the heat of the summer I love bringing more red into the living room. I still have the little Duraflame wood-stove heater in there....nights in the mountains can get cool, and it's nice to be able to turn it on with a remote from my favorite chair when I crave the warmth and the ambiance.

Most often you will find me on my swing when I finally relax....but after dinner I'll sometimes curl up in my favorite chair and watch TV for a while before bed.

Lately I've been watching the Little House On The Prairie series....I'm not sure why, but I started watching it from the beginning and couldn't stop!

Maybe it's because my life is so incredibly busy that I feel the need to look back at what seemed a simpler life. Of course, they didn't have our modern conveniences, so I'm sure it was anything but....however, they also didn't have the drugs and crime that we have now. I suppose it just seems simpler, and of course more wholesome.

I think most of us crave a simpler life.

For now, I'll just grab moments of peace whenever I can. I'll sit in my swing and listen to the sounds of the birds and my wind chimes, and thank God for my blessings.

And I'll check in with all my sweet blog friends whenever I can.

Happy 4th to you all!

  2. I always enjoy peeking into your home. Little House on The Prairie was a favorite of mine all of those years ago. I enjoy the simple things, hence the name of my blog, lol.

  3. I loved Little House on the Prairie. I red the series of books when I was younger too.

Your property must keep you very busy. Don't you love watching the fur babies sunbathing?

Keeping up with the outside, working and the house you must love sitting on the swing for down time.

    Enjoy the Fourth 🇱🇷🇱🇷🇱🇷

  6. Debbie, I agree, I think we all crave a simpler life. Ours is much simpler with our downsizing, and I find I want to travel the backroads of WV this summer in seeking more of the simple life. Enjoy your quiet moments. I know your life is incredibly busy. Your home is certainly a respite for rejuvenating, even though it also has enough work to keep you busy even when you're not working your day job! Happy 4th.

    1. It is a lot of work, Rita, as you well know....I'm sure it was hard for you leaving your beautiful home and gardens and that river view, but having a little less work to do will be enjoyable for sure!

  7. I need to stay inside a day and get things done. I haven't lately. Everything in and around your home is welcoming and that deck is a wonderful place to be. I like your grouping of comfortable seating around the fire pit.
I wish I could find slip covers that would cover damask red sofa I have for a change. I like the fabric on your sofa and the pop of red in the pillows.
Lovely home and sweet fur babies to share it with. Happy 4th to you - Betsy

    1. It felt good to get the house cleaned up again, Betsy - to anyone else it looked fine, I always keep it neat and tidy, but I knew the floors needed to be done and the pillows and throws swapped for fresh ones. The pups love to lay on the pillows and throws so I really should change them out more often than I do, but time is the enemy!

  8. I love summer but it's just too dang hot and humid here in northern IL to have the doors and windows open. That's not anything new this year; it's always like this. Our AC runs pretty much non-stop from June - middle of September. This morning was a temp drop ("only" in the 70's instead of the 80's) but humidity was still at 86%! We sat outside on the porch very early with our morning caffeine (iced coffee for me, hot tea for Brian) but my allergies were terrible and I couldn't breathe. So we didn't last too long out there.

I'm glad you got a chance during your extremely busy time to fluff your nest. I know how much enjoyment you get out of that and I totally relate, because I love doing that, too.

I don't think I remember seeing that sign your BF gave you for Christmas. I love it! I'm sure you'll find another good spot for it if you put your window AC in. In our area, no one has window AC units - it's all central air conditioners.

Hope you have a wonderful holiday! Hope you have the day off. ;-)
    xoxo

    1. It's hot and humid here too Melanie, this is the longest stretch of hot sticky weather I remember since I moved up here. I'm not loving it!!! My office has floor to ceiling windows that look out at the mountains....lovely, right? Sadly, they don't open and the a/c has been broken for weeks. I'm melting!!! Also sad....no I do not have the day off. :(

  10. Debbie, I loved your "sun puddles." And it looks like your kitchen is laid out like mine, with the door (yes, open) to the left of the sink/window; but my dishwasher is on the left side. You're right about the longing for a simpler life; that's my constant goal!

  11. It's all so lovely, Debbie! Your morning routine sounds delightful - would love to have hummingbirds right out my kitchen window. I have been watching Little House too. Totally brings me back to my childhood, especially the theme song.

    1. We are truly kindred spirits, my friend, no doubt about it!! My kids used to watch it when they were little, too, and the last time my mom was up at my house I made her watch it with me - it brought back memories for her also!

  12. Happy 4th weekend to you - and I just spent a few hours on my porch reading a good book with the dogs lying around - and thought - why don't I do this more often? I think it was a year ago the last time I allowed myself the down time. Your porch swing looks like the perfect place to do just that.

  13. Debbie, seeing this post I would definitely agree that yours is a "home sweet home". Everything about it says cozy, welcoming and restful. Your dogs are so cute. One looking directly into the camera and the other giving a side glance. Wish I could read their minds. I see so many items in your home I would love to have in mine. The light over the kitchen sink for one, and the bench under the window in your dining room that you're using for plants. We have an open space under the windows in our living room where I plan to put something like that. I especially like the idea of storage underneath. Your home is lovely. Thanks for sharing your morning routine, too. Hugs, Nancy

    1. Awwww, thank you Nancy, that's so sweet!!! The pendant light over the kitchen sink I made with a pendant light kit (from Amazon) and a drum lampshade from Lamps Plus....easy peasy!! I adore that lampshade, I have a second one on a standing lamp in my living room and it makes me happy every time I turn it on! The bench under the window I got from either Hayneedle or Wayfair....I needed something to store linen napkins in, and it fit the bill perfectly! Good luck furnishing and decorating your new place!

  14. I love the pictures of your pretty home and I love that Mountain Mama sign in your window! I can't believe you have your windows open though and the air conditioner not in?--it's not hot there? Wow, that's go to be so nice. It's been awful hot here, heat index up to the hundreds but that's to be expected, it's summertime in the South, LOL! Loved the picture of your sweet babies in the sun puddle!

    1. Eek, Debbi, I'm not sure I could handle that heat!! My attic fan goes on automatically, that helps cool the house, and I open the skylights to let out hot air as well. Nights are generally cool in the mountains, and remember I work during the hottest part of the day! If I can go the whole summer without putting the a/c in, I will do so happily!

  15. One nice thing about the heat is that I do stay in and get things done. Cleaning is on my list for the weekend. Thanks, as always, for the inspiration!

  16. Everything looks beautiful! We haven't watched Little House, but we do watch Bonanza on a regular basis. Down here near Saratoga we've reached the 90s the last few days, so the air conditioning has been running non-stop. Can't wait to have the doors and windows open again.
