Spring on the Mountain Top

I cannot believe how long it's been since I posted on here....thank you to all my sweet readers who reached out to make sure Sweetie and I were alright.

We're fine, thank God, just laying low and staying home, like the rest of the nation. I pray you are all doing well also, and not going stir crazy at this point.

I've been very, very busy with work....as many of you know, I plan weddings for a living. Well, guess what.....it's been a stressful couple of months, without a doubt.  Add to the state of the current world and weddings the fact that my company was sold, and we are transitioning into a whole new computer system and it complicates things tenfold. Sigh.

If you miss me when I'm not able to get on here to post, you may want to follow me on Instagram....I tend to post on there nearly every day.

As an avid gardener, working from home in the springtime should be a dream come true....after all, I can spend my lunch time in the garden, and head straight to the garden at the end of the work day, right???

Yeah. Not so much. We've had the WORST spring weather, and I'm completely frustrated with it at this point.  We've had sub freezing temperatures, snow, hail, crazy wind storms, and rain, rain, rain. And did I mention there's more snow on the way tomorrow? I'm over it. Seriously.

These photos were taken on a day when I mistakenly thought Spring was actually coming to the mountaintop. The forecast looked good, with temps above freezing, so I started planting some cold tolerant annuals and herbs that I had already hardened off.

And then, lo and behold, everything changed. Winter came back. And now it won't leave.

The perennials are trying to flower, the poor little things....the carpet phlox on the garden wall is ready to burst into bloom, if the sun would ever shine on it for a hot second.

The daffodils were looking lovely, like little spots of sunshine on the garden steps

And then the snow came and flattened them....now they're hanging their pretty little heads.

All the little pots are back in my dining room....so much for getting a head start on my deck garden.

Everything I can't bring in has to get covered each evening. I'm not sure it will be enough, but I'm hoping and praying. Everything that was planted was either overwintered or started from seed, and it would be a crying shame to lose them at this point to the lousy weather.

The babies are so anxious to get out and play their favorite game, Chuck It. But the back garden is so sopping wet I can't possibly run them out there, they'll be absolutely plastered with mud.

Look at sweet Molly, she's such a tiny little thing out in the big world....all she wants to do is run and play with the Monkey, and do her zoomies and happy hops all over the garden.  She comes with us on our evening walkabout, but she gets bored. Monkey would stay out with me all day long, sniffing and sniffing, but Molly heads back up to the deck after a while and waits for us there.

I'm watching and watching the weather, praying that winter let's go of its grip on us soon....I have a feeling we're going to go straight from winter to summer with no spring in between.

It looks like things might begin to change for the better on Thursday....say a prayer for us, will ya?

What's it like in your neck of the woods? Has spring settled in to stay yet?

Be safe and well, my friends - xo

    1. It sure would be nice to move my laptop out to the deck for a while each day, Jenn!

  2. You know I feel horrible with the weather you have been dealing with for weeks.

NJ isn't getting snow but it seems the cooler temperatures won't leave. There isn't all that much sun either.

It's getting ridiculous. Praying things get better.

    1. Yesterday we had all sorts of weather in one day....sunshine, warmer temps, hail the size of gobstoppers, heavy rain, wind, thunder, and then a frost. Crazy, crazy, crazy!

  3. So good to see this from you. Sorry you've had a lousy spring so far, and hope you lose no plants to this upcoming cold weather. May the work transition go smoothly for you also. Love, hugs and prayers ~ FlowerLady

    1. Can you tell this weather has me completely frustrated, Lorraine? I feel bad for all the poor birds that are nesting, and the hummingbirds that are trying to drink frozen nectar!

  4. It's been cold here for a few days, and probably will be through Wednesday. But my patio garden is growing quickly and looking good. And hopefully will until the horrid head descends.

  5. Hi Deb glad to see you posting. I bet it has been a real headache with rescheduling wedding events. We have not had the best Spring here in Illinois either. It will be in the 70's and then drop to the 40's and even a couple of days in the 30's with frost warnings. I have had to keep all my flowers and plants in the garage. Hoping the middle of the week will turn the corner and I can start to plant. Stay the course and I hope the new learning on the computer and the new company will be good.
    Hugs,
    Kris

    1. Thanks, Kris - my heart truly goes out to all my wedding couples who have this awful virus changing all their plans. It's so sad, thankfully most are rescheduling and not cancelling outright, but we lost a few of course. And it's not over yet!

  7. Your place looks so pretty. We are having a cold spell here in WV and I am late to planting our veggie beds. We are going crazy or I should say me since Hubby is still working. We do not go anywhere and I am getting stir crazy. Our state is starting to open up slowly and hopefully we can get out soon.

    1. The only place I've been in months is to our local market, and not often, maybe twice. Sweetie always asks me what I need when he's going, thankfully. We are missing a lot of big celebrations in our family this spring though....that's hard. Be safe!

  8. Good to hear from you, Debbie! As soon as I opened your post, I immediately wondered what kind of turn your job had taken. Ugh, conversion stress, and as soon as practical, the stress of the events themselves. Stay safe, my friend.
Our weather has been strange, but tolerably so - wind, rain, yo-yo temps. Just the past few nights were down to freezing, but warmed again through the day. This week ending we will have mid to upper 80s, which feels like a spring robbery. I hope your plants make it. I know you always put so much work into planning and starting from seed.

    1. There have been a ton of furloughs in my company, Rita - fortunately I am still working, at least for now....praying it stays that way as of course I am a ONE income family with a mortgage to pay. Good to hear from you, hope things are well in your world....or as well as can be expected.

  9. We've had the same here in western NC, looked like spring was here, then days on end of freezing overnight temps. All my plants are back inside for the third bloody time, and I am ready for it to warm up for the season.

  10. As you know from my comments on IG, we've had a cold spring so far, too. We even had snow flurries mixed in with the rain on Mother's Day. Looks like we're in for a warm up starting this weekend. Finally! Hope the same holds true for you.

  11. I'm so very sorry for you gardeners of the cold north! I promise to try never again to even think about wishing for snow--we only had two light dustings here in Nashville this winter. You've worked so hard this winter babying along all those seedlings it would be terrible to lose them. Surely it won't last much longer and you'll be safe to plant anything.

I can't even imagine how badly the wedding business has been affected in this season of favorite months. Our former neighbors who were in the country wedding venue family business have had their lives affected hugely. Thankfully they also farm. But I know that Molly and Monkey have loved having their Mama around more and I'm sure you have turned out some wonderful meals. Let's hope that you get good weather soon now so you can grow produce to restock your freezer and canning next fall. And I'm glad you posted again here even though I do enjoy keeping up with you on IG and FB!

    1. IG is much simpler of course, Dewena, it's so easy to put up a quick pic that I took with my phone. I've been trying to get pics of the foxes that are living under the barn next door, but it's tough as I need to keep my distance as well. Thanks for your sweet and encouraging comments always - it's so nice to be able to connect with people in a socially distant way! Be well, my friend.

  12. I've been following your post on Instagram and couldn't believe all the snow you've been hit with this spring. It's crazy!! We actually got a little snow shower on Saturday. It was shocking down here, we don't usually get snow after April 15th. Here's to a warm up my friend...and I hope work gets a little easier, but I can't imagine it's calm with all the rescheduling that must be going on. Stay safe!

    1. Yeah, it's been pretty stressful, Kim, and I have no idea when this is going to end. Our industry has been hit exceptionally hard, and all those poor brides and grooms that were preparing for their spring and summer weddings....my heart just goes out to them. I know how much goes into planning a wedding. Hope you are all doing ok down there....xo

  13. It's been cold here, but it's supposed to warm up today. Should hit 79, then in the 70's the next two days, with rain. By next Tuesday it will be up to 90. We're definitely seeing a shift in the weather pattern. At least we had a few nice days in April where we could get out and get yard work done. Soon enough we'll be complaining about the heat! Hah! Hugs, Nancy

I'm not going to tell you the weather here...it would only depress you............hahaha LOl!! Hang in there!!

  16. Your yard is so nice. It feels like winter again today here. Windy rainy and very chilly.
Planning weddings is taking a hit right now I am sure. My niece is a wedding photographer and she is not getting the work for that. Her last jobs were California wedding and New York. Just before the virus really took off. Will pick up soon. Take care, betsy

    1. Hi Betsy - We were in the 30's again last night, and again tonight, but above freezing thankfully, so that's something to be grateful for....and the sun is shining today, so the plants will love that. I think I'll get my tomatoes planted this weekend, yayyy!! Be well....

Three Wedding cancellations on Monday this week, not a good way to start the week...it's difficult as I don't know what to tell my wedding couples....I mean, who really knows what our future looks like at this point? Stay safe, my friend.

Your yard looks quite lovely, even despite all the setbacks. I hope that things turn around weather-wise for you. OUR leaky roof, OUR wonky water pump, OUR rusty wood stove lol! :) We just have to schedule repairs and things like that when the budget allows, but honestly, it's still a wonderful experience! :)

    1. Hi Debbi - everything is fine, just super crazy busy - many in my company have been laid off so I am doing the job of 3+ ppl at the moment. The fox family is still living under the barn, Mr Fox makes an appearance every now and again. Thankfully I have not seen a bear yet this season....fingers crossed it stays that way!
