Winter Weather in April

So, here we are in April and the weather forecast says February.

What is going on with this bizarre year we've had?

Just look at that low temp for Tuesday - are you kidding me? What will happen to all the buds on the trees? All the plants that are greening up? All the roses that have sprouted? The clematis that is growing already? My daffodils that are just now making big fat flower heads, getting ready to bloom?

I just don't know. I truly don't.

I'm worried.  And there's nothing I can do about it.

The pansies are in the garage again. Looks like they'll be in prison for a while.

We're supposed to get 3 - 5 inches of snow tonight, followed by crazy winds tomorrow. And snow again on Monday.

I just can't. I'm so over it. I just want it to be spring already....and STAY spring!

What will happen to all the birds that have returned from their Southern migration already? They aren't going to know what the heck is going on!

The bears are out of hibernation. Maybe this will send them back in.

That's no harm.

Meanwhile, I'm taking it easy today because I did a job on my back last week lifting all those stones for my new garden bed

And I didn't help it much when I tried to move my stove on Wednesday.

Yikes - this whole getting old thing is tough!

I'll be resting up today and trying to heal my poor back.

I'm making a big pot of chicken broth in preparation for the cold days ahead.

And I'll be starting the next batch of seedlings this weekend - it's time for the tomatoes!

Other than that? I'll be catching up on all my sweet friends' blogs, some reading, and watching a little of the boob tube.

I have to find out what the ladies are up to in Litchfield Prison on Orange is the New Black.

Anyone else obsessed with that show?

  1. we are having sporadic weather as well / one day it went from 27 to 70 / so far the heavy frosts and freezes have not harmed the early blooming varieties but several inches of snow is another story ! :(

    1. I wonder if the snow may actually help insulate the plants from that wicked cold night....I'm hoping, Deb!

  2. Stay warm young lady....spring will surely come to stay soon. Our spring did come in nicely then went crazy. It's down right cold today, we had a fire in the fireplace again. Yes, honey, my pansies are hiding out too. I am eager to get them planted. Blessings, xoxo,Susie

    1. I'll be starting up the woodstove tomorrow again - the fire is laid and just needs to be lit. Today was in the high 40's and I know if I started up the woodstove I would have melted with these darned hot flashes!

    1. I'm kind of glad it's not super nice out today because otherwise I'd have a really, really hard time resting this back!

    1. So what kind of weather are you having in Oklahoma? Florida weather? Darned global warming!! :)

  5. Gosh that weather sounds awful, and here I am worrying because we could get down to 31 degrees Tuesday night. Everything here has tender new shoots and buds too. Downright depressing! :) You take care. Hope your back gets better real soon.

  6. We are heading back into winter here in Ontario. too. -6C tomorrow...yikes! That is February weather. I'm with you, Deb. I can't take another day,of winter cold and especially that four letter word...snow. Apparently, we might get more. :( That looks like the beginnings of a good soup. :) Deb

    1. It will be good soup for sure - and the weather will be perfect for it, unfortunately! I can't wait to be able to grill outside again!

  7. I'm looking out the window right now as it's snowing side ways and I want to CRY!!!! I'm in Northern Illinois and this weather just sucks, sorry I couldn't hold back. We have 50 mile an hours winds, my gutter just came off the house and my plants are going to die! Other than that it's a sparkly day. Stay warm and hope that back heals up fast! Chicken soup will cure anything, hopefully it takes care of the blues. :)

    1. Oh no, that's not good - I don't have any gutters on my house so the snow melts, drips onto the deck, and then freezes into a solid sheet of ice - I think that might need to be remedied before next winter for sure! Stay warm and safe, my friend.

  8. I've never heard of that show. But I probably don't have it anyway. I only have basic cable with channels 1-20. We didn't get lows like that all winter. In fact, I don't when was the last time we had lows below thirty-something. I'm so sorry about your gardens! If you had something to cover them with maybe? The bear may come out and rail at Mother Nature!

    1. I watch it on my daughter's Netflix account. Snowy days are great for binge watching a show like that! :)

  9. Say it ain't so! OH, I hope your little plant do well in the cold. They're saying we could get some snow tomorrow but up here it seems they always don't get the forecast right. Maybe it's because we're between the Catskill Mountains and the Adirondacks. I'm ready for spring.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  11. I've told you this before and it's true...we are having much of the same weird weather patterns that you are! Today it was high of 32 with wind gusts up to 50 mph, plus snow and sometimes hail! I kept looking out my windows at the tree buds and my lilac bush and the green plants poking out of the ground and wondering how they're going to survive.

I'm not much of a TV watcher, but the two Netflix series we eventually watched all the way through was Orange is the New Black (fantastic, though overly-raunchy at times) and Broadchurch.

    1. Definitely too raunchy at times, but the story line just sucked me in! Yeah, the wind here has been brutal for the past few days also...I'm shocked I haven't heard a tree come down in the woods.

  12. I have refrained from planting some things although our forecasts don't look as bad as yours! It's a hard time of year for us gardeners.

    1. It sure is, Leigh....I'm satisfying my gardening urge somewhat by tending to my seeds in the lower level. Round Two is going in today!

  13. It is doing the same here, we call it Blackberry Winter, when there is a freeze right when all the wild blackberries are starting to bloom. What part of the world do you live in? Your mountain pictures look a lot like mine.

    1. That's funny, you're the second person that thought I was in the Carolinas...I guess our mountains do look alike! Nope, I'm in upstate NY, in the Catskill Mountains. Blackberry Winter, huh? I kind of like that phrase!

  14. Here in northern MN, we're having much the same kind of weather, only colder. Yesterday it was only 17 degrees with strong north winds and a few new inches of snow!! Those perennials are pretty tough, and the snow should insulate them until it warms up again. I'm so over winter!!

I haven't watched that show, but I think I've seen every crime show on Investigation Discovery this winter. Chicken soup sounds good!

  15. I think we were down to 34 degrees last night and now at a bit after 10AM are only at 38. Our winds were VERY gusty all night long making it a bit difficult to sleep. Guess winter is not totally done with us yet. Sorry to hear about your back injury... ugh.... I do that a couple of times a year. Aging sucks!

    1. It sure does, but it's better than the alternative for sure! Give me a good reason to sit down once in a while.....which I seem to have a hard time doing on my days off as there is always so much to be done!

  16. Yikes, you have some cold temps predicted! It got down to the upper 20's last night. We covered as much as we could. Back problems are no fun, besides who has time for that?! I really hurt my right hip last year, digging holes to transplant peonies. Old joints wear out... Take care...xo

BTW, just discovered your blog a few days ago and I love what you have done with your living room. The hot pink is fabulous! I spent several hours reading your archives to catch up. One of my favorites now.

  18. I'm with you: I am SO over this! Ut was 75 and then 78 2 days last week. Today it is 32 and 50MPH winds! Last night we had pouring rain and HAIL! I have eggs in a nest in my front door wreath and it almost blew away til my hubby secured it. Mama is in there, holding on for dear life!!! I WANT SPRING, waaaaa:):) I hope all the bushes and plants make it too!

    1. Oh, those poor little birdies! I had babies in a nest in a wreath one year and we got a terrible storm that just washed the babies right out of the nest - it was the saddest thing, I cried like a baby. Hope your babies are safe and that the storm has passed you by at this point! By the way, what's your blog? I can't find it in your profile and for some reason I couldn't email you directly either!
