Adding Unique Style To Your Garden

I'm sure, like me, many of you are doing a ton of planting these days. I have been logging some serious steps on my fitbit, no doubt!

I love gardening season!

I'm still tweaking some of the plantings, experimenting with a few different combinations of plants I haven't tried before. When they fill in a little I'll share what I've done so far.

In addition to plants, there are many ways to add style to your garden spaces, using unique accents.

This rusty old wheel has been in my garden for years, moving with me from home to home. When I moved into my new house I found these old galvanized watering cans on the property and put them to good use on my stone patio.

This little Namaste Frog is my latest addition to my garden decor. I bought him in honor of my older daughter who has just completed her 500 hour yoga certification and is graduating next week.  He's just the cutest thing and brings a little zen to my garden...and my day!

I love looking online for inspiration and can get lost for ages just browsing around at all the gorgeous ideas various folks have to add a unique touch to their garden spaces.

These are some ideas that really jumped out at me lately:

Via
I love the use of these childrens' wagons in the garden as container gardens, they add an additional splash of color and a playful touch.

Via
What a great way to recycle an old door! This vignette has such a country cottage feel, perfect for my little house.

Via
This old ladder makes a great spot to display birdhouses, and adds some height and additional interest to the garden bed.

Via
I love the  use of this old galvanized trough as a container garden. This would be amazing on my patio, I'm kind of drooling over it!

This is in my own garden, a photo from a 2015 post showing the andirons and old metal trough I used in a damp corner behind the veggie garden.  The andirons were thrown in a woodpile, and the metal trough was behind my garden cottage in a pile of trash. I like them much better here!

Via
What a great way to use a rusty old tricycle in the garden - this is certainly one way to hold on to those memories of childhood.  I'd tuck it into a garden bed, perhaps with a nice groundcover, rather than have it out in the lawn.

Via
I absolutely adore this old metal headboard in use as a garden trellis! This makes me want to visit a scrapyard and dig around to see what treasures I can find!

Via
This old chair might not be safe for sitting on any longer, but it sure is cute as a way to create a patriotic display in the garden. I have a rickety old bench at my place that I'm going to look at in a whole new light after seeing this!

Via
How cute is this? A blogging friend, Jann, over at Have a Daily Cup of Mrs. Olsen had this great idea to hang a colorful watering can on a shepherd's hook. It adds such a nice splash of color and a dose of playfulness to the garden bed.

Well if this isn't one of the most creative ideas, I don't know what is! What a way to take a somewhat drab and dreary staircase to a whole new level!

What's your favorite way to add a creative flair to your gardens?

  1. Debbie, I liked all the clever and cute ideas. The old chair with the flags, the trike...but OMG, I feel in love with the teapots. I guess we should never throw anything away. Congrats to your daughter and her certification in Yoga. My daughter Angie does Zumba classes. I adore the zen frog..it will be special with your daughter doing yoga. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie

  3. So many cute ideas! The meditative frog is fantastic! Congrats to your daughter on her accomplishment.

I will be looking for a wagon wheel like that to create an herb garden. The seeds get planted between the spokes. I learned about that from the gardening class I am taking at the extension center and I just love the idea. It will free up space in the garden for other things by being compact.

    Thank you for the inspiration!

    1. I saw that on Pinterest, Daisy - what a cute idea!! My herbs are in boxes on my deck, right outside the kitchen door. I love being able to run right out and snip what I need while I'm cooking dinner!

  4. I love all of these ideas. I am thinking that I may make a small garden area at the end of our house to brighten up the space and I can hardly wait for some dry days now to work on it. I wish I could find some of these old treasures that have been used in these gardens. I love the tricycle. I have a bench that I have thought of getting rid of and now I know what I want to do with it.

  6. There's some really great ideas out there! I wanted to visit the site from which you showed the photo of the ladder with the birdhouses, but when I clicked on "via" underneath the photo, it simply brought up the photo, not the site. We're using our kid's old crib springs for a pea trellis! :-)

  7. Such great ideas! I especially love your rusty wheel and the watering cans...well, I love the Namaste frog too...so cute. Our neighbors threw away their kids' little red wagon and I'm kicking myself for not fishing it out of their trash...ha! I put a child's wooden chair on our porch with a rooster holding a sign...one side says "Welcome" and the other side says "Go Away". I wish it rotated when solicitors come to the door...ha!

  10. I love all these things! I have bought some statues, have found a couple on the side of the road and at estate sales, but that zen frog is adorable! Would love to know your source so I could gift one to a sister retiring next week, Debbie.

    1. I have always had a thing for wheels in the garden, Vickie. I used to have an old wooden wheel but eventually it fell apart. When I saw this metal one at a garden show I had to snatch it up immediately! It's been with me ever since!

  14. I have the Radio Flyer wagon filled with succulents and the watering can on a shepherds hook. I love all your garden pictures and especially the bed post. I have an old metal bedspring mattress that I want to put some kind of vine to grow up and through. I have also been collecting bed headboards to paint in pastel colors and make a fence for the back of our yard. Hopefully I get to these projects this summer!
