I promised you an update on the Bear situation, so here it is.
He was missing for a few days. I thought, perhaps, that he had moved on, since he didn't find any food around my house.
Nor did the poor birdies, which I am missing terribly. It's a shame, I will have to work to get them back, when the bear scare is past.
Anyway, I digress.
I was starting to become a little more comfortable outside in my garden once more, not looking behind me every second.
And then he was back. On a bright sunny morning, there he was, rambling around my backyard like he owned it.
I shouted at him, "Go Away, Bear" and he moseyed off into the woods once more.
Whew.
Later that afternoon, my little Monkey wanted to play ball.
She loves her Chuck It. She'll stand by the closet where I stash it when it's not in use and cry, looking up at me so pitifully, wiggling her tiny tail.
How can I say no to that little face?
So, off we went to play Chuck It.
When she sees me take it out of the closet, she gets so excited, she starts barking and jumping around like a lunatic.
I open the kitchen door, and the Monkey takes off like a nut-job, running down the steps and out to the back garden, barking like a crazy dog.
I throw the ball from the deck, and then head out and meet her in the back garden to continue our game.
She really, really loves her Chuck It!!
Anyway, eventually it's time for her to take a rest, and me to get some peace.
So I lure her back into the house with the promise of a 'cookie.'
We swap out the ball for a treat....works every time.
And mommy can go back out to the garden and water, in peace.
Except that while I was watering, I heard this God-awful screech in the woods.
I turned around to see the bear dropping out of a tree.
I'm not sure which of us was more terrified, me or the bear.
I can't believe it, but it looks like Sweetie was right - the bear must have been scared of the little Monkey, and scrambled up a tree!
I still wouldn't want to see her chasing him, but it appears that bears are certainly afraid of dogs.
Would he be afraid if he realized that her bark is much bigger than she is?
I doubt it.
But, perhaps it worked....because I haven't seen him since.
Fingers crossed it stays that way.
Because I need to take my garden back.
Oh, that's scary! So glad little Monkey didn't go after that bear! I wouldn't know what to do if I ran into a bear! Hopefully the bear won't come back. Looking at little Monkey' face, it looks like there's some lipstick on her little cheek. Did you do that? :) I've been out of pocket for some time and got lots of catching up to do! You stay safe.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Lipstick? I don't have any idea what you're talking about! Ha ha, yes, those are mommy's kisses on her little face!
DeleteSo glad your dog didn't chase after the bear. I can only imagine the racket of a bear falling from a tree. I probably would have screamed. LOL.Stay safe honey. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteI certainly did scream, Susie!
DeleteOh my - be safe. I have never had these experiences although many in Colorado did. One year we had a drought and they were everywhere. Do be careful as I know you are.
ReplyDeleteI do try to be careful at all times....there are more than just bears up here, so I always keep that in mind.
DeleteI seen a video on line the other day and thought about you. It was a little tiny dog chasing two bears as they ran up a tree. The bears seemed afraid of the little barker.
ReplyDeleteLisa
Oh, how funny!! I haven't seen that!
DeleteI imagine, of all the things I will see in my life, I will probably NEVER witness a bear falling out of a tree...
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Ha ha, probably not, at least not on your sweet patio!
DeleteThat is crazy! I'd be paranoid working out in my yard, especially if I had a dog out there with me. Please be careful!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny what you get used to, Melanie, isn't it? I feel much safer here than I did when I was in the city and had a tall fence around my itty bitty garden and giant metal gate with a lock on it 'protecting' me.
DeleteI would never want my dog to confront a bear whether the bear is afraid of it or not. You just never know. Take care when you are outside, Deb.
ReplyDeleteVery true, Deb, that's exactly how I feel!
DeleteGoodness, I'm so glad Monkey did not tangle with that bear. Hopefully the bear is scared off now though. Please do keep some bear spray near you though just in case.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad also, Debbie, you better believe it!
DeleteWe had one tear up our finch feeder socks and bend over the shepherd hooks they were hanging on the other night. Our neighbors have seen him, but we haven't yet. He probably likes the compost I throw off the deck...lol! I'm glad your sweet baby didn't get in a confrontation with Mr. Bear.
ReplyDeleteOh boy, that's not fun! Yes, you may need to stop with the compost.....that could draw some other critters as well. My compost is in a heavy duty composter and it still sometimes makes me a bit nervous.
DeleteSo scary!!!! Keep Sweetie safe! Nancy
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nancy - I'll certainly try my best!
DeleteOh, your little hero! He scared that big bear right up a tree...good for him! Glad everyone is safe...especially your Monkey! Must have been quite the site seeing Mr. Bear falling out of a tree! ;)
ReplyDeleteShe is my little hero - her bark is way bigger than she is!
DeleteWell I'll be darned !!! :) I didn't think your Sweetie was right, either, as in I thought that maybe a BIG dog could do that but a small one?
ReplyDeleteShe may be small but she's mighty, Deb!
DeleteWell I'll be darned !!! :) I didn't think your Sweetie was right, either, as in I thought that maybe a BIG dog could do that but a small one?
ReplyDeleteWow again! Just too close for comfort.
ReplyDeleteSo true, Rita...GO AWAY, BEAR!
DeleteI'm a Jack Russell girl too. My favorite breed and I've had three over many years. They are mighty little soles, so I totally understand your worry they would chase that bear.
ReplyDeleteThey think they are HUGE when they are only tiny little things, Gina!!
DeleteI wouldn't have the courage to be outside with the dog! Please be careful...hoping the bear will not return.
ReplyDeletexo
Pat
So far, so good...no sign of him for a few days now. Fingers crossed, Pat!
DeleteI know how serious and scary it must be to have a bear in your yard, but the visual I got when you said you heard the screech and then saw the bear drop from the tree was kinda funny. It reminds me of the huge elephant afraid of a tiny mouse thing. Stay safe!
ReplyDeleteHa ha, yes, it is a comical thought....but it scared the heck out of me when it happened!! :)
DeleteHahah - this is sure making a good story! You should swrite a children's book about your little monkey and the bear! Glad everything turned out okay.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that's been done, Vickie?
DeleteSo cute that your sweet little "monkey" loves her chuck it ball. My granddog Charlie that is a boston terrier loves that same game. He will run after that chuck ball for hours if you let him. He does the same thing and stares at the cabinet where his ball is too. So cute. Hope the bear was scared off for good.
ReplyDeleteKris
She would keep at it for hours, too, if we let her! We have to tire her out and then lure her inside with the promise of a treat - we trade the ball for the treat and lock it in the closet again!
DeleteWatch your little dog - once the bear gets used to it, it may not be so safe anymore. Have you called the Forest Game Warden? He may be able to give you some advise and perhaps relocate the bear.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck; living with bears can be interesting & frightening.
Thanks, Valeria, you are right - interesting and frightening, as is much of the wildlife up here. The authorities only step in if the bear is a 'threat' and so far, he has not been, thank God!
DeleteI really don't think that the bear was afraid of your adorable doggie. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteBut I would not trust the bear one bit. He'll be back and around
at least until this coming November or so.
But as long as you are aware that's about all you can do.
Good luck!
Monica
So true, Monica - and at a previous home the bear never hibernated at all for an entire winter - that was awful!
DeleteI am catching up on all your bear adventures today, woah, what a crazy adventure! I hope the bear finally decides to hang out someplace else so you guys can get your garden back! Weirdly enough, bears aren't that common where our land space is (neighbor said they saw one a few years ago) but now I'll my eyes on the lookout! Keep us updated on how it goes!
ReplyDeleteThat's so bizarre, I just thought they were everywhere up here. They used to visit my house in the valley as well, but they are much more prevalent up here on the mountain top, for sure. Be careful, Pamela - they would love your new garden!
DeleteI just received an email from our community's manager talking about the rise of bear sightings here. It linked to an article about what we can do to avoid bears, but more importantly, how they are typically afraid of dogs. I thought of you and lo and behold, find this post! I'm going to try to forward you the email/article. Maybe you'll find it helpful in keeping Yogi out of your yard.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, please don't let the bear keep you from your yard as they don't attack humans, but keep your adorable monkey near you at all times.
Thanks so much, Doreen - I'll check out the email - any advice is welcome, for sure!
