Winter Lingers On

Winter lingers on here on the Mountain Top, that's nothing new.

We are in the midst of yet another snowstorm, with about 6 inches of snow expected.

Not surprising as it's still February...winter isn't nearly done with us yet.

On days when it's not incredibly icy out, I love to walk around my property and spend a little time outdoors.

I bundle up and head down my driveway to listen to the trickling of the creek, and of birdsong in the air.

It feels good to be out in the fresh air after being cooped up indoors all winter.

I moved my old deck swing to the stone patio - this is the spot we get the best late winter/early spring sunshine in late afternoons.

The sweet scent of pine comes to me on a breeze, a reminder that winter won't last forever.

My view from the swing is of my garden cottage, and Papa's garden. I think of him with much love while I sit and look at his beautiful garden, sleeping under the snow.

When the clouds glow orange in late afternoon I know there's a spectacular sunset, although I don't have a view of it from my house. I know it's there, and that's enough for me.

Come spring, I will be working very hard outdoors getting my property and gardens ready for a busy, busy season.

But for now, the pups and I are enjoying a little rest and relaxation whenever we can.

Little Miss Molly has been a member of our family for nearly 18 months now, and I can't remember what the house was like before her.

She stole our hearts the moment we saw her, with those big brown eyes and those silly little teeth. She's the life of the household, with her crazy antics and her huge heart.

She absolutely loves to cuddle, and the second any of us sit down for a moment she's right there on top of us, giving us all her love.

She'll be asleep within minutes, and will stay there tucked in beside us all night long.

I always say Molly has only two speeds - ON and OFF. That little sweet angel expends so much energy when she's awake that it's no surprise she conks out at the drop of a hat!

She doesn't just love her humans, she loves her sister Monkey as well, and they often cuddle up together on one of the living room chairs.

They both love to enjoy the morning sunshine, and we have our little morning routines down pat at this point.

First thing after our good morning snuggles and kisses they get their multi-vitamins and glucosamine cookies to help them maintain healthy joints. Then they 'help' me feed the birdies, by running out the kitchen door barking like lunatics, chasing away any 'squirbles' that might have the nerve to be up on the deck.

When it's time for me to go to work, the pups go downstairs to my daughter's room, where they will stay until I'm home again. They have comfy beds and blankets, lots of toys, and a big bowl of water. It's their safe zone and they actually 'ask' to go down when they see me getting ready for work.

Before I leave for work, I gather up all the toys they've scattered about, fluff the pillows, straighten the throws, and spritz the furniture with a linen spray.

It's nice to come home to a tidy, cozy space - it starts my evening on the right note.

The pups and I fill the feeders before work every morning and make sure there is fresh water in the heated birdbath

The critters sure do appreciate the seed and fresh water on these frigid winter days, and the pups and I love the entertainment right outside the window.

Spring will come to the Mountain Top in its own sweet time....but until then I'll take bits of it wherever I can. My seedlings are coming along nicely in the utility room, with the second batch sowed last weekend - Celery, Leeks, Sweet Peas, Parsley, Basil, Thyme, and 5 varieties of Peppers - and they are all sprouting already with the exception of the Celery and Parsley, which take forever.

I had three little pots of spring bulbs chilling in the downstairs fridge since the fall, and I brought the Hyacinths up over the weekend. Look at them, they are huge already - they will be blooming in no time!  I put them right by the kitchen sink where I can enjoy their fragrance as soon as I come in the door, and while cleaning up after a good meal.

Winter lingers on up here on the Mountain Top, but that's ok - it just makes spring all that much sweeter when it finally arrives.

    1. It does look pretty, doesn't it, Benita? I should just take advantage of the sleeping garden and learn to relax and enjoy this time of rest! It's tough when I start seeing posts about spring all over IG and blogland....makes me yearn for warmer weather, sunshine, and flowers!

    1. Looking at the ten day forecast there is no relief in sight for us, Marty - just more snow, more snow, and more snow....and frigid temps.

  3. We're supposed to be getting 4-7" of snow here tonight, too. I know it's still winter, but it's the ice that's been so awful this year. It seems that we have ice at the tail end of almost every storm. Well, spring is in sight! Your little Molly is adorable, and Monkey is too!

    1. My sweetie has a lovely view of the sunset from his front porch, but unfortunately I don't get that same view - oh well, I love my view of the mountains and the horses, so I'm happy with that!

  10. Debbie the view around you always amazes me. Since I have been following your blog since meeting you on Instagram I love seeing your beautiful property. The creek must be amazing all year and gives you different gifts every season.

Miss Molly sure is cute. Reeses and Peanut have been sleeping in their crate since we brought them home 8 years ago.

I say crate but it's the Ritz Carlton of crates. They have human bed pillow 9n bottom with furry bumpers on all four sides with a blanket. They LOVE their bed. They run to it every night at bed time.

Aren't they the best. We love them so much.

You need rest at winter for all your gardening

  15. Winter is still very much lingering here, too in IL! I am so tired of it. The first part of March we might set records for below-normal cold. The entire month of Feb has been never-ending snow, ice, freezing rain, 60 mph winds and frigid cold. I am sooo longing for spring! Molly is so darn cute. I love her little teeth. :-)
