Adopt, Don't Shop

Hi Friends!!

Thank you sincerely, as always, for your visits and your many sweet comments - every single one is cherished and I do try to answer them all!

My daughter wrote a very touching heartfelt post on her blog today.

When I read it, I knew I had to share it here with all of my warm and wonderful readers just in case we may be able to help even one furry little baby.

Meet Shannon, my youngest daughter!

Adopt, don’t shop

I saw this on facebook today and had my heart broken.
This poor little baby is considered “code red” because he still has not been adopted.
The staff and volunteers put this green Christmas sweater on him (two months ago) in hopes of having him swept away by a loving family. But he hasn’t been- the saddest part to me while reading it is that staff and volunteers say that he sits in his cage with his head down all day.
I felt such a pull and compelled to share. My blog is small, just getting started. But maybe one person in Miami will see this and tell a friend, who will pick him up. Or if that does not happen, maybe someone in another state will see this and adopt instead of going to the pet store, like they had originally planned.

Why does this happen?
Do you think people walk by and see him sad, not happy, jumpy, and enthusiastic like the other pups there and overlook him? Because if I saw a dog this sad while looking around, I would just want to scoop him up, bring him home, and make him happy again.
I wish there was a grant out there for people who want to own pets but simply can’t afford it.
Is there?  I don’t have knowledge on this, but maybe someone else may know.
I think this may be a big part of the problem- that people may see him, want him, but are just unable to afford it- or he may have special needs, like perhaps cannot be in a home with children, and the family who wants him has children.

A few months ago, my mom was following this 8 year old Jack Russell named Minnie Pearl:

We saw her on the news and felt drawn to her- but as you may or may not already know, we have 2 Jacks at home already. [ Struggles of a Jack Russell post ]
We simply couldn’t take on another doggy, but my mom basically said that if she was not adopted in a few weeks, we would look into it.  But we are so happy to see she has been adopted!

I just felt compelled to share my feelings. This struck me so hard this morning and I feel so passionately about helping these little babies that even if I reach one person, that is a win to me.

*UPDATE - after I published this post, I visited the Miami Dade Animal Services Facebook Page and learned that Bobby was adopted!  The article about Bobby in his Christmas sweater must have gotten a lot of people’s attention. There was a line out the door at the society of people wanting him. Yay!

Thanks, Shannon!!

I love a happy ending! There are many more pets out there that need our help. I also went on the shelter's Facebook page and apparently they are a high kill shelter as they get so many animals in need of a loving home. The good news is that they will deliver a pet - they have volunteers that drive  1 1/2 hour legs of a journey, relay style, to deliver pets to their new homes.

There may be a little furry baby out there looking for you right now!

    1. Our old girl was a rescue also as were all our family dogs growing up. My old girl was not spayed and since she was the best dog on the face of the earth I bred her, wanting to continue her bloodline. Nope, I got a wacky little monkey!! They are both spayed now, and my next pup will be another rescue. Sooner rather than later, if Shannon keeps sending me these photos!

  2. Your daughter did well posting about the little dog. I thought his heart must be broken...how sad. I wish when people take on the responsibility of a pet...they make it part of the family...otherwise , why have one at all. And never buy a kid a pet no matter how many promises they make...if you haven't the time or energy to do for the pet yourself...cause kids will get bored and will forget. Blessings to all of you, xoxo, Susie

    1. Didn't you just want to pick him up and hug him and give him treats and toys and cuddle him and kiss him and make him happy?????

    2. Thank you much for the kind words Susie!

I agree very much with you- so many people buy pets for christmas gifts and then they end up in shelters- I think it's so important to educate the kids as a family about the responsibilities of bringing a pet home so more and more pets don't have to go through these heartbreaking moves from family to family.

  3. I looked at the picture of bobby and was cryin.....then I read on and saw he got a home!!!!!!! Happy tears now. I do so love the animals and we have rescues, one literally rescued right off death row in a kill shelter and she is now such a joy to us. I loved this post....an issue so close to my heart and so so important. We all need to do more. We really do. Thank you for shedding more light on this issue and as i always say....if it rescues just ONE animal in need then it was worth it

    1. If he was in NY I would have been on the phone immediately to adopt him! the other dog (Minnie Pearl) that we saw on the news we watched for a week on their shelter site, and if she wasn't adopted she was coming home with me!

  6. When I saw the picture of Bobby with his head down and read that the workers said he was like that every day, it absolutely broke my heart. Made me want to jump in my car and drive all the way down to Florida and rescue that poor baby! (Unrealistic, I know...but that was my gut reaction.) I was so glad to read at the end of the post that he was finally adopted! All my cats throughout our married life have either been adopted from shelters or strays taken in our home.

  7. I saw the story of Bobby on FB, my sister who is very much a rescue advocate in FL posted it. I'm so happy that he's been adopted!

All of our dogs have been rescues since we lost the last of our corgis years ago. Our Jack Russell is a Katrina survivor, our 1/2 Pyrenees & 1/2 bulldog came up our long driveway on his last legs a few years ago, skin and bones and now really needs to go on a diet! Our beautiful black cat was the same story, came up the drive in bad shape but wound herself around our legs and our hearts. After we lost our 15 year old dachshund in 2012 (and we adopted her when our vet called to say her owners had wanted her put down as a puppy because they didn't want to pay a vet bill), we mourned her for a year and then found two miniature longhaired black dachshund brothers who at 9 years old had been surrendered to a dachshund rescue. They are the love of my life, and I always tell people not to be afraid of adopting older dogs from rescue. They are amazing!

    Lovely post, Shannon!

  8. I'm so glad to read that Bobby Baby found a home! YAY!
I LOVE rescue dogs. My sweet Kramer lived to be 15+ yrs old and I still miss him.
Then we adopted Boudxy, but when our daughter got married last year she took him with her and he's doing wonderfully. I hope to adopt again in the future. I miss having a dog. BTW, your babies are adorable.

  11. I literally just cried reading this post and knowing that the poor lonely and sad dog finally had a warm home and family. I had seen that same post of Facebook and my heart ached for him. All of my fur babies over the years have either been adopted from shelters or were looking for new homes when their owners could no longer keep them. Rufus, my "assistant" that you see pictures of on my blog, is a special needs kitty that we adopted from our local Humane Society. He has many "issues" that made it difficult to find a family that was willing and able to deal with it all. We are still working on some of his behavioral issues (like licking himself raw when he does not get his way) but I would not trade him for the world. He is part of our family.

    1. Same with me, with the exception of one dog years ago who was a gift from a boyfriend at the time.

And I think they all have little issues, don't they? :) They are personality quirks, and we love them even more for those things that make them unique!!

  14. Oh those pictures were so sad! Our dear Roger was a rescue dog, and he was quite sick when we got him. He had such a nervous temperament, had diarrhea, constant sick smells from his bowels, and scarfed his food like there was going to be no more. He never sat still, knew no commands, and was just a mess! Thankfully, a year later, you would never know he was the same dog. We have cleaned up his digestive issues, he is the happiest sweetest fellow, and will sit still for long periods of time and let us pet him, and responds to many commands we have taught him! It has been such a joy to have him in our home, and to know we saved him from certain death. We were told he had been in three different shelters in two years, with no one taking him home. How awful for the poor little guy. We are so glad he is home with us now :) Enjoyed this post! :)

    1. Awww, that's such a sweet and wonderful story!! I love to hear about rescues like that! I did adopt my older girl, Lily, but from someone who had to give her up. She never made it to a shelter, thankfully, although I have adopted many other pets from shelters in the past! Such a great feeling to be able to help a little furry friend!!
