Life And Love On The Mountain Top

I often share my projects with you, here on my blog. But what you don't see is that while I'm planting flowers and veggies, or cooking up a feast, my sweetie is very often here at my house, working his little butt off.

He sees things that need to be done and takes it upon himself to tackle the project.

He's a very, very good sweetie.

And he L-L-L-L-L's me. Which he proves to me in a million little ways every single day.

One of the ongoing projects he's been working on is my back lawn.

Now, I'm not one of those people who needs a perfect lawn.

Nope, never have been.

As long as it's neatly trimmed and looks fairly green, I'm fine with that.

I can't stress about every single dandelion and all the creeping charlie. I have a million other things to do.

My sweetie, on the other hand, has a gorgeous piece of property.

And he does care about things like dandelions.

So, when my lawn got tore up last season during all the construction, he took it upon himself to make it right again.

He leveled out the tire ruts, filled in the trenches with top soil, and planted grass seed.

And he watered. And watered.

And now, you would never know, that last summer my back garden looked like a war zone.

This season, he's been tackling some of the larger patches of weeds.

Digging out large sections of lawn, filling in with good soil, and then planting grass seed.

I told you, he's a good sweetie.

Of course, as it goes up here on the mountain top, he's been encountering a major amount of rocks.

Not just these fairly large ones, that he tossed around a lilac tree. As well as many others, which I used when rebuilding the rock walls around the veggie garden.

But these super sized ones, that nearly killed him when was trying to dig them out.

Seriously, these rocks are huge!

Those are not the feet of a small child. Those are my tootsies, size 8, in my favorite green Sloggers.

Those rocks are ridiculous! I was really worried about my sweetie when he was struggling to get them out - I don't want him having a heart attack over a stupid rock!

Isn't it crazy that this is what's right under the surface grass? How does anything grow here? I just don't know.

Meanwhile, over at Sweetie's own house, things are growing as well. Starting with these adorable newborn Robins, in a nest in his Rhodies.

They are nothing but a blur of beaks and feathers at this point! Little cuties, I hope they will be safe.

And I had to capture the antics of this little red squirrel at his window feeder. I bought the feeder for my sweetie a couple of years ago, so his kitty-cat, Lucy, could have a good view of the birds.

Well, this little red squirrel was putting on quite the show yesterday afternoon!

First, she scrambles up to the feeder, and gets herself into position.

The little cute face goes into the feeder, stuffing her cheeks with sunflower seeds.

Then the face comes out....see the seeds sticking out of her mouth?

And WHOOSH - she swings upside down, hangs on by her tiny toes, and uses her 'hands' to eat all the seeds.

It was the funniest little show! She's quite the acrobat, this little squirrel mama! I could see her teats were all engorged, she must be feeding a family somewhere - I'm sure she's famished and needs to keep up her energy!

Back at my house, I caught this fuzzy bumble bee napping on a chive blossom.

I guess I never really thought about how or when bumble bees sleep, but this little guy was resting on that one blossom for ages! Long enough for me to go get the camera, put on the lens, come back out, take multiple photos....and then move on to other things. He eventually woke up and flew off, It was amazing!

Isn't nature just wonderful? Bears and all, I wouldn't trade my little mountain top life for anything.

And my sweetie? I'm not trading him either.

  2. I wish I had some of those rocks! I love rocks. Always have. I realize you have too many though! I never worried over a lawn either. If I had one I usually turned it into a garden!

  3. You surely are blessed to have such a sweetie. I'm like Cozy, above, I would love to take some of those rocks off your hands. That little wall around your garden with them is adorable. I would likely use them in much the same way around my patio flower garden. It is in need of some type of border.

    1. On Comfy House, I saw that Melanie had used empty wine bottles turned upside down and shoved into the ground as a border - I thought that was a super cute idea! They'd no doubt shatter here with the ice and snow....but perhaps if you are somewhere with more temperate weather?

  4. How nice to have someone fix your lawn like that! And those large rocks! Oh,my!!! Loved seeing the antics of the squirrel. You wouldn't think that they would have the ability to do that, would you. I do love nature but not black bears! LOL Nancy

  5. Your lawn is beautiful! You are blessed to have such a great sweetie. I am so excited to hear of someone else that has seen napping bumblebees! I noticed last month quite a few of them just hanging on the brussels sprouts that I let go to seed. There were also a few on the ground below that I thought were dead. I felt sorry and thought that someone must have been spraying pesticides and these poor little creatures were the victims. So, I picked up one of the precious bumbles, and as I was holding it, it started to stir. I let out a scream (I sounded like a little school girl) and tossed the bumble into the air, and just before it hit the ground it flew over to the next brussels sprout flower just like nothing had happened! So, I started watching them and noticed that quite a few of the bumbles actually slept inside the flowers all night long, and as the sun hit them and their bodies warmed, they woke up and went about their day. I was amazed! So cool!

  8. I can't believe all those rocks are just below the surface of the ground...like others have commented, I would love to take some of those off your hands! You two sure have done a ton of work and yes, your sweetie sounds like a keeper. We have a ton of squirrels around here and I had to take down my bird feeder the other day and put it away for the summer because the poor birds weren't getting any seed...it was just the bad squirrels and chipmunks! I have to say though, your mama squirrel sure looks cute. I never cared how my lawn looks either - same as you, as long as it's green and mowed, I'm all good. We have a ton of weeds; mostly Creeping Charlie. But we won't use any chemicals/weed killer, so we have to live with it. We'd literally have to dig up our entire yard - front back and side - just to get rid of it all. And it'd come back anyway, because all the neighbors have it, too!

    1. Same here! I started tackling some of the dandelions in one of the lawns this spring, but when I looked at my neighbor's grass it was just covered in yellow blossoms - so what's the point? Why waste my time?

  10. I should add, in East Tennessee where I live we have to pay $100 for a rock (yes 1) of any size. I ended up paying $70 for a tiny pallet of rocks the size you put around your tree!

  17. Wow what a wonderful thing to have a green lawn. I wouldn't have done all the work your Sweetie did, but it sure will be a thing of beauty now and in the years to come. Cannot believe the size of those rocks. I thought those were baby feet beside them. Holy Moly. My back hurts thinking about it. Wonderful things going on on top of the Mountain.

  21. I never realized until recently that up north we're fortunate to have rocks like that right on our property. Many areas, especially down south, do not have them and they're super expensive to buy. I actually found that out recently with our stone steps! We have tons of rocks too, and that's actually what we used when we built our fire pit. Our friend has a tool that long and is made out of iron and is used to move rocks and works great. It's a worthwhile investment.

That squirrel is adorable, and you got some wonderful pics of her!
