Welcome To My Heaven On Earth

It's that time of year when we are transitioning from a season of heat and humidity to a season of cool breezes and chilly evenings.

At least, that's what's right around the corner for us up here on the mountain top. We've already had our first night that dipped into the 40's and it was heavenly! Clear and cold with a billion stars twinkling brightly in the sky - the kind of night that reminds you that fall is on its way!

I'm excited - we had quite a few hot and sticky days up here this summer, which is unusual for us. I can't say I enjoyed them - this Irish skin has a hard time with the sunshine.

So, bring on the fall - I'm ready!

It's funny how, as fall approaches, we tend to start looking around our homes once again. All of a sudden we notice the things that our eye swept right past when our focus was on the gardens and the outdoors.

Where did that cobweb come from? Wow, those windows need cleaning! The kitchen floor could use a good scrub, the pantry needs to be tidied up, and the linen closet needs a little TLC as well.

One thing at a time, it will all get done in its own time.

I'm excited to share with you one simple update I made this week in preparation for the cooler months ahead.

It was time to bring the master suite out of spring and summer mode and bring in a little more warmth.

Remember back in April when I lightened things up in the master suite?  I loved the look I ended up with, it was so calming at the end of a long day.

But it's nearly September, and it was time for a refresh.

I headed off the mountain to The Happiest Place On Earth - Home Goods!

Am I the only one who's obsessed with that store? Please tell me I'm not alone....

I spent a very happy hour or two...maybe even three...wandering around, drooling over about 3/4 of the store....but knowing I didn't have the budget or the space to bring it all home with me....sigh.

And then I saw it.

THE THROW. Yes, it warrants all caps. It's that amazing.

I fell in love instantly.

It went straight into the cart. And it was the only one, so I protected the cart like a madwoman, lest someone grab it when I was distracted for a second.

Yes, that much in love.

Can you see the bling? The metallic threads woven throughout? And the colors? It's just perfect for my room, and perfect for the seasonal update I was craving.

The weave is almost like a tweed, which is ideal for fall, but a very updated sort of tweed....tweed with attitude!

The rest followed. I picked up a couple of new throw pillows, also with serious bling. And, although I hate buying pillows - I prefer to buy just the covers - they were just too awesome to resist. A soft, furry throw for the chair, a paisley runner for the dresser, and some metallic placemats for the nightstands. Simple changes, nothing drastic. Just the refresh I was craving.

I am so pleased with the updated look. The room just looks so cozy and very calming, like a room at a luxury spa getaway. But better....homier and ever so welcoming.

The colors I used in my master suite were really drawn from the tile surround I selected for around the fireplace.

There's a hint of blue and a hint of a pearly metallic in there, along with warm beige and a cooler grey.

The wall color I chose was Benjamin Moore's Revere Pewter, which is truly the perfect neutral. It can be grey, when needed, or beige.

I love my master suite so much, and it was worth all the long months....and cost....of construction.

The room is not large, by any means, but it has everything I want within the tiny footprint.

Across from the bed is a wall of custom built ins, created by my amazing contractor. The fireplace is double sided, and is viewed from the tub and shower as well as the bed. And the TV is large enough that I can actually see it....although I do have to wear my 'cheaters' when watching it...sigh, getting old, no doubt.

'
Right under the TV is a tiny sign I picked up on our recent vacation - which is perfect for my room, which a friend dubbed The Princess Room the first time she saw it!

I truly do feel like a princess in my suite, when I close the door and have a quiet, clean, calm place to wind down at the end of a long day.

Next to the built ins is a little wire shelf with hooks that I got a while back from Decor Steals. This is sweetie's 'closet' when he's at my house.

Don't laugh, it's perfect for his needs!

The light that comes into my bedroom is wonderful, with two large windows. And the serene color palette relaxes me the second I step into the room.

One of my favorite new additions to the room is the picture that's over the bed - what a difference it made in the space!

That wall was naked for such a long time - I simply hadn't found anything I loved enough to hang there. Not to mention, the anal side of me was really worried that it would bother me that anything I hung would not be centered on the wall...since the bed wasn't centered on the wall.

But you know what? It doesn't bother me even the tiniest bit! It's centered over the bed, and that's just the way it should be. I love it!

It's a picture of a Parisian street, and since I have dreamed for many years of a trip to Paris some day, it just seemed perfect for my room. Not to mention, the colors are ideal, and the hint of metallic complements the surround around the fireplace.

I am truly in love with this picture. And the most amazing part? I found it at Home Goods! I've never bought a piece of art from Home Goods, as I never wanted something that I felt everyone else had. But, this was the only one I saw, and it just jumped right out at me. I fell in love instantly! And the price? Even better - just under $40!

It really makes my room feel 'finished' finally. I have quite a few more spots in my home that still need artwork, but that's ok, I'd rather take the time to find things I love, than buy something just to fill an empty wall. A home that's collected over time is much more appealing than a home that is decorated out of a showroom.

One of my favorite corners in the whole house is this tiny chair and ottoman I have tucked into my bedroom.

The closet in that corner is the original closet in the room...it holds dresses and heels that don't get worn often, as well as my vacuum and the extra throw pillow covers and inserts. Everything else lives in the walk in closet. This little closet doesn't need to be accessed completely, I can open one side and get what I need without bother. It was the perfect spot...and the only spot...to tuck in a little chair and ottoman.

I always wanted a proper chair in my bedroom, a place I could escape to read or watch TV if the girls had a bunch of friends around. I find myself bringing my coffee in here in the mornings, just to start my day on a quiet, peaceful note. I sit in my chair, check my emails, the weather, hop around blogland....it's a really nice way to start my day.

Right outside my window, I hear the horses in their paddock, and the birds in the treetops.

The ottoman tucks perfectly into the corner next to the dresser when not in use. I looked for a long time to find the perfect sized chair and ottoman for that little corner, and I'm so pleased with my choice.

The soft, furry throw and sequinned pillow really add the luxe touch to this corner, to complement the rest of the accessories in the room.

On the dresser top, I swapped out the summery runner with the yellow birds for this more sedate runner in a grey paisley. I love the way it looks like a shawl on top of the dresser, it feels very warm and welcoming.

The accessories stayed the same, as I am very happy with the look. Nothing new needed!

All in all, I couldn't be happier with my little piece of heaven...my princess room. It's all I ever dreamed of in a master suite...and more.

It's nearly impossible to get a photo of the whole room without the ceiling fan making an appearance, but oh well - this is real life, folks. I constantly have multiple water bottles on the nightstand along with my book, iPad, tissues, a spotlight to investigate any strange noises heard in the night...and a pair of glasses.

This is my life, this is my heaven on earth.

And I feel so incredibly fortunate to be able to lay my head here every single night.

I am truly blessed.

  2. I love your new finds. That picture is so nice. You know it doesn't have to be a master or cost a fortune...if you truly love it. I am in love with your perfect corner. Especially with the window right where you can sit and enjoy breezes and hear the outdoors. Blessings to you "princess".:):) xoxo, Susie

  6. Absolutely beautiful! The colors are a perfect transition into the cooler weather. Your master suite is stunning. It is still very hot and humid here in Tennessee but I am dreaming of those 40 degree nights! I, too spent a couple of glorious hours wandering around Home Goods this week and it made me so happy! Found a few throw pillows and a couple of accessories.

  11. I like the cool and restful color scheme and so jealous of that night that it went into the 40's lol! We did have two nights when it went to about 55 which was such a nice break but it's quite hot again and has been so for days.

  13. You have made some lovely choices. I love the lace curtains, your new bed throw and the Paris picture. We went to Paris once but I did not enjoy it much. Up close the Eiffel tower is a piece of rust, they packed us in the elevator like sardines to go to the top and our tour bus was stopped by some motorcyclists on strike that did not want to let us through. On the other hand I loved London, England. Happy Fall! Nancy

  20. I love the colors in your fireplace surround and how you've used them in your bedroom. And to imagine that you get to enjoy the fireplace from your bathroom too, pure luxury! I really like the headstart you've gotten on autumn on your mountain top. And that new picture over your bed is perfect!

I was telling my future d-i-l this afternoon that I've never been to Home Goods and she told me I have to go!

  21. I don't think the throw could be any more well suited for your room. No wonder you love it!

  22. I do indeed love HomeGoods! Love your throw - the colors are perfect for your room. My last two throws were both bought at HomeGoods, too. So, back to your room. I am envious! It looks so warm, inviting, comfortable, lovely, a touch feminine...and that double-sided fireplace?! I'm so there! We've been working on our bedroom for over a year (we are sooo slow!) and are having the hardest time finding a headboard that works with our bed. Nothing on the walls yet, either. I want to wait until we find the right headboard, then side tables, then last comes the art work. Like you, I won't just hang anything on the walls simply to take up space. The artwork you found goes perfectly in your room. It looks like it was made to be there! I was laughing so hard over your boyfriend's "closet" space! Oh, and speaking of closets, I am also envious that you have a walk-in closet. The closet hubby and I share is about as big as the one that you use for extra bedding and your vacuum!

  28. I love your new throw and how it indeed plays off the colors of the fireplace surround. One of the great joys in my life has been drifting off to sleep while watching the flickering glow of a fire. My parents have 2 fireplaces at their home on a lake. One in the living room and one in their bedroom. Before they moved up to the lake full time, my husband, kids and I used to drive over and vacation for long weekends at their place. My husband and I would curl up in bed and watch the fire (it is a gas burning one and has a remote control...so in love with that) and talk about our dreams.

  29. It's completely perfect! I don't care for the supersize master bedrooms. We had one in our last house and it never felt cozy. Our current one is tiny by today's standards and we love it! I adore the touches of fall in your room. I think I might spend some time this weekend cozying up our house too although I know our weather will be up and down for the next month. You've inspired me!
