One Thing Leads To Another

So, I did something stupid this weekend.

Well, in all honesty, I'm sure I did more than one thing that was stupid....but I'm only telling you about one thing.

I cleaned out my linen closet.

Completely emptied it, cleaned all the shelves, sorted all the linens into piles - tablecloths, placemats, runners, linen napkins, hand towels, etc.

And I realized I have a LOT of table linens.

Which is ok....I love setting a nice table, and I change up the colors depending on the season.

But, once I emptied the linen closet I had to also empty the napkin drawer in the china hutch...and empty the basket underneath the hutch that holds more linens.

Because, if I'm going to do something, I need to do it right.

And I didn't want things all mixed together any more, as they were. A few things here, a few things there. I wanted all the napkins together....all the tablecloths together....all the placemats....well, you get the idea.

I piled it all on the dining room table and got busy.

So, after a couple of hours of sorting, refolding, etc. I decided there was only one solution.

I needed to replace my cute green sunflower bench in the dining room with some storage for linens.

Monkey's not going to be happy.

She loved hopping up on that bench to peek out the window at any critters that caught her eye.

So, I scouted around down in the disaster of a lower level to see what I might be able to use up here for linens.

Unfortunately, this was all I could come up with.

I put a pretty red sparkly runner on the top and a plant that needed more sunshine and thought I might be able to make it work.

Yup, I tried, I really did.

My daughter walked into the dining room for dinner and said, "Nope, that's gonna have to go."

She was totally right. I left it there for a few days, hoping I could start to warm up to it.

I thought about where else in the house I could move it, that I could still get the linen storage I needed.

But, nope, it wasn't going to work. No way, no how.

It actually hurt my eyes to look at it.

So, I did what any good blogger would do. I started scouting around online to see what I could find that would work, and not make me want to gouge out my eyes.

I hopped on over to Wayfair - they always have an amazing selection, and super quick shipping.

I found this super cute wooden bench with rattan baskets and drawers. It was the right price, arrived the very next day, and holds MOST of my napkins.

The drawer in the china hutch holds the rest.

I can live with that!

I will miss my cute little green bench in this spot, but I'm sure I can get used to this bench. It's far more functional for me, and that has to be a priority in a small home like mine.

Of course, I had to change out the knobs straight away, to my favorite green glass knobs from Pottery Barn that I bought en masse the very second my offer was accepted on the house.

There's a possibility some might say I'm a bit anal.

Oh well....I can live with that, too.

    1. I don't think she will, with the two plants on top of it. But I did think of that, Donna! Who knows, if the right squirrel passes by, she might just give it a try!!

  2. The new piece of furniture looks great! I need to clean out my linen closet, too - though it doesn't have any table linens in it, just bed and bath stuff and some cleaning supplies. This job has been on my to-do list for months! I give you a lot of credit.

    1. I've been meaning to do it for months, Melanie - it took me forever to get to it!! I don't keep many towels in there, just hand towels for the guest bath. All the guest towels are in the big green monster in my guest room, along with sets of sheets. I have all sorts of bizarre misc items in my linen closet such as cleaning supplies, paper towels, misc linens, boxes of contacts, candles - you name it, it's in there!!

  3. It's hard to find exactly what we would love and what would work in one piece of furniture. I like this for the storage...the height may not work for the dog. Pets love lying on something comfy with a good view. :):) I need to go thru my napkins too. I have some favorite ones that I will keep forever. Blessing to you and yours. Hope you have a great Holiday. xoxo, Susie

    1. My Monkey has enough places in the house to get comfy - she's so spoiled! I really do love my table linens and, like you, I have some for many years that I will not part with! Happy Holidays to you as well, Susie! xo

  4. Aw, give Monkey a pillow on the top and let her have her spot. It looks close to the bench height she is used to. Cleaning my linen closet is on my list for January. Each year I pick one thing to really do right, last year it was my recipe file. After washing, folding and ironing 20 napkins today, I decided table linens will be next thing to organize, and donate what I am not using.

    1. I like the area on top for plants, Pam - I have one plant that hates me, it's nearly dead, and I'm hoping being by the window will revive it.

  8. Sorry but to me the green bench looked perfect not to mention puppy will be so sad.
Not a fan of the modern piece with the other 2 pieces on each side of it.
I would forgo the linens if it where me.

    1. I did love the green bench there, also, but in my small house sometimes storage and function has to come first!

  9. I love the solution you came up with and now I don't feel so bad for my "collection" of linens, most of which never get used unfortunately. We do use the napkins but gave up on the tablecloths with a huge shedding dog, a cat that loves to rip them off the table and little grandsons who also spill and knock over things. ;)

    1. Oh my gosh, I can see why you gave up tablecloths, Debbie!! My table is antique, so I tend to use them to protect the table....but I also like the way they look, so it's a win/win!
