Spring was Squashed!

As you know, I was super excited about all the signs of spring around my garden this past weekend. It was a glorious weekend and most definitely whet my whistle for a true taste of spring.

But, alas, it is not to be.

Not yet.

It was about 10 degrees when I awoke to a winter wonderland this morning. We got a few inches of fluffy, powdery snow....perfect for skiing, not so much for gardening.

I knew it was too good to be true.

The sunshine. The blue skies. The warm temps.

The Prosecco on the garden swing.

And that's not the worst of it. I don't mind a little of the white fluffy stuff.

After all, it is early February. We expect it at this time of year.

But this winter has been such a tease!

Winter...spring....winter....make up your mind!

The worst part is....we are in for a true arctic blast.

Just look at that forecast for Saturday. Are you kidding me? Negative 10?

Nothing will survive in the garden. Or the garden cottage.

That's the end of it all.

Daisy (AKA The Monkey) has the right idea. This is the kind of white fluffy stuff I want to spend time in at this point.

Did I ever tell you one of Daisy's many, many nicknames is Squish?

I don't remember why, it's been so long now....perhaps because she squishes every single pillow in the house into her own cozy little warm nest.

Squish says that Spring has been Squashed.

Thanks for nothing, Squish.

Bold brat.

    1. You may sing a different tune with those negative 10F temps, Karen! There's nothing nice about that....except cuddling up on a pillow next to the fire like my pup does!! Thanks for popping in - nice to meet you!

    1. I have two Jack Russell's, mother and daughter. That photo is the daughter - she's 6. The horses had snow on their backs this morning - I felt so bad for them, not sure why they don't have blankets.

  5. I so look forward to your window photos. They are just gorgeous. We are expecting -27C by the end of this week so -10 sounds balmy. lol We Canadians are tough but I'm just not into it this year. I want spring. :) Your pup is so cute. I miss our darling Kane every day. It's only been three months since he left us...I have a long way to go with this loss. Give your pups a hug for me and stay cozy. :) Deb

  6. Daisy is adorable...and we are in the deep freeze, too...can't last forever, I guess.

  7. Squish/Daisy is very pretty on her chic white pillow, one eye in white, one in brown! We have a Jack Russel too, a Katrina survivor rescue. I don't dare show her this or she'll want a fluffy feathered pillow.

Negative 10 degrees? How do you keep the pipes from freezing there? At 13 predicted low here, we'll be running faucets and leaving sink cabinet doors open, and there are light bulbs on near pipes in the crawl space. Is it having a basement there that keeps pipes from freezing?

I love your windows looking out at the white fields--with a touch of red!

    1. I guess it's because of the basement, Dewena. When I was looking for a house I knew that a crawl space was NOT happening - that was a deal breaker for me. My marital home had a crawl space and our pipes used to freeze....and my husband would shimmy under the house with the creepy crawlies....well, let me tell you, there's no way that you would get ME under the house so therefore NO CRAWL SPACE!!!

  13. I sure would NOT be able to handle -10 temps. I'm cold here in s.e. FL as we are having a long spell of, for us, cold weather. In the 50's during the day.

Hope some of your gardens survive ~ FlowerLady

    1. I sure hope so, too, Lorraine, but it's out of my hands. I doubt the pots in the garden cottage will make it. It was worth a try though, don't you think?

  14. I noticed that your getting snow before the arctic blast which is a very good thing as it will insulate those wee babies from the cold. They will be fine....yes you may loose a few but living where it gets that cold it is just a miracle that they do survive. Stay warm...

    1. I thought the very same thing, Robyn - the snow will help with a bit of insulation. I wonder if putting on my tiny heater in the garden cottage would help them survive? there's no insulation in there so I don't know....

  17. As Donnamae said, COLD here. Just stupid cold!! Do you have a basement where you could bring a few of the pots from the shed inside? I winter over many potted plants in our sun porch. They get a bit spindly, and once in a while I forget to water them for a week or two :-( , but they pretty much always make it and I think they bloom so beautifully all summer to thank us!!

    1. I can't even tell you how long I've had that heart, Betty - must be 15 years or so. I bought it at a garden show in early spring one year, about an hour north of here. What a great garden show that was - I left there with so many ideas!! And the little heart...and a forsythia wreath....and my steel wagon wheel, which I also still have!

  19. Yeah, our spring got squashed too! The snow was melting, and then it snowed again, and now, it is melting again. Who knows when spring will come, lol! Hate to hear that you are getting such cold weather this weekend. Stay warm friend... and I love the pictures of Daisy and her cute nickname, lol! :)
